Rodolfo L. David passed away on August 5, 2015 at the age of 88. He was the fifth of nine children born to Simplicio David and Elena Lacson on November 15, 1926 in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines. His wife Julita Alabado David, son Randolph Joseph David, and grandsons Paul Randolph David and Philip Matthew David survive him.
His lifetime was distinguished by his intelligence, humor, style, kindness, generosity, willingness to sacrifice and sense of duty. As a young man in the Philippines during World War II, these traits became essential to his and his family’s survival where he served as an internment camp translator. After the war he worked as a detective for an investigation bureau and he also achieved his bachelors degree.
In 1960 he left his homeland for San Diego, California in pursuit of his Master of Business Administration degree and to be with the love of his life who was also studying at Cal Western University in Point Loma. He married Julita Cruz Alabado on November 30, 1963. The birth of their son on June 17, 1965 marked another beginning of great sacrifice for Rodolfo David. Though overqualified, he took a position as a clerk at Lions Clothing store in downtown San Diego so he could help raise his son and that his wife could complete her Masters degrees and begin her career.
The three Davids moved from San Diego to Chula Vista in 1972. Since then Rodolfo, also known to many as Rudy, enjoyed his life with his family and countless friends. He contributed for over 30 years to his community on the Human Relations Commission and as a Grand Juror. His efforts were recognized by the Chula Vista City Council, San Diego County Board of Supervisors and the State of California.
In spring 2014 he was diagnosed with colon cancer, that following September he was put under hospice care. Despite his illness, Rodolfo L. David’s wit and loving spirit remained strong, endearing and infectious. His final days at home were spent surrounded by family until his death.
