

Tomas was born in Botolan Zambales, Philippines on September 20, 1923 to Francisco and Isabel Galendez. In June 1945, Tomas joined the US Navy as a steward and served faithfully for 30 years until his retirement. In 1964, he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer in Washington D.C. At the time of his retirement in 1975, he was a full-time instructor at the Naval Training Center in Point Loma, California.
After retirement in January 1975, he obtained an Associates of Science degree in Real Estate and was an real agent in San Diego for a number of years. He eventually owned and managed a number of real estate properties in South San Diego. He also worked as a Life Insurance Agent and Tax Preparer.
As a life-long San Diegan, he was a loyal Padres and Chargers fan and continued pursuing his love for gardening and passion for cooking up to end. Throughout his 69-year marriage, he and his beloved wife, Avelina, enjoyed traveling throughout the states and places abroad, including Europe. Tomas was an avid member of the Plaza Bonita Club Walking Club for a number of years and could be seen every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings walking and enjoyed visiting with friends afterwards.
Tomas is preceded in death by his parents, Fernando and Isabel Galendez, his sisters Natividad Ramones, Primitiva Aranda, Teresita Tinimbang, and his brother Fidel Galendez. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Avelina Merza Laurio Galendez, his brother Conrad Galindez of Suisan City, CA; his daughters Lina Galendez of Chula Vista CA, Cristine Aki and spouse Fidelis of Anchorage, AK, Donna Abbe and spouse Don of San Diego, CA, and Gale Hutchinson and spouse Scott of Tijeras, NM; his grandchildren Nicole Poblete, Cassandra Glenn, TJ Camacho, Melissa Moore, Kara Hutchinson-Michelback, Tomas Moore, Robert Moore, Emma Abbe and Ian Hutchinson; his great-grandchildren Camille Naumann, Olivia Naumann, Claire Glenn, Charlotte Glenn, James Michelback, Anthony Michelback, Leilani Camacho, soon to arrive Adis Lane, and numerous close relatives throughout California, from San Diego to Orange County to San Francisco.
