Teta was born in Cavite City, Philippines on April 20, 1938, the eldest of three children of Tomás and Hermelinda de Guzman. She graduated with honors from the University of Philippines in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. On July 22, 1962, she married the love of her life, Oliver and eventually settled in San Diego, California. Their union created five children: Charmaine, Rose, Stephanie, Jessica and Oliver Jr. Teta worked as a medical technician in San Diego for over 35 years before her retirement.
Teta’s greatest achievement was being a loving, giving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin and friend. She loved traveling, dancing, gardening, playing Bingo, doing crossword puzzles and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. We will miss all the big things about her like her tremendous passion for her family and her unwavering faith. But we will also miss the smaller things: her questionable health advice (does sleeping with your hair wet make you go blind?), her endless need to feed people (“Come eat now”), her devotion to tending her orchids, her random humming while doing chores around the house and most of all her infectious and distinctive laugh.
She was the compass in our family and we feel lost without her, but the memories of her will be our North Star in the years to come.
Teta was predeceased by her parents, Tomás and Hermelinda de Guzman, her beloved sister Daria del Rosario and brother-in-law, Danilo del Rosario. We take comfort knowing she has been reunited in the heavenly skies with those she loved and those who loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Oliver Yambao; her children Charmaine (Dr. Jeffrey Toy) Yambao, Rose (Allan) Wood, Stephanie (Jason) McMahon, Jessica (Carlos Bacalski) Yambao, Oliver (Lynn) Yambao Jr.; her much loved grandchildren Ronin Toy, Bebe Toy, Francisco “Paco” Bacalski, Salem Bacalski, Milo Wood, Elisa “Isa” Yambao, Stella Wood, Penelope “Penny” Yambao; her brother, Teodoro de Guzman and his wife Chat de Guzman; her nieces and nephews and her extended family.
