Ginny was a proud Boilermaker who received a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Sociology from Purdue University. While studying at Purdue, she met her future husband Donald Eugene Taylor. They married shortly after graduation and moved to Pensacola, Florida where Donald began his career as a Naval Pilot. Ginny worked as a social worker until the birth of her first child Pamela Dee in 1961. Second child Debra Eileen came a couple years later in 1963. The Taylor family moved to Chula Vista in 1968. Ginny was a homemaker and a volunteer for the Navy Relief Society for nearly 25 years. She was a proud Navy wife who took on the role of head of household 9 months out of most years, while Donald was deployed. Ginny was a Girl Scout Leader as well as a Band Mom for the Castle Park Jr and Sr High School bands. She relished in her role of being “mom” to all!
In 1985, Ginny began working as the Volunteer Coordinator at the San Diego Air and Space Museum. She worked there for 15 years, and became friends and created memories with 100’s of volunteers and staff.
After retiring from the museum, Ginny traveled often with the On the Road Again travel group. She enjoyed dozens of adventures throughout California and the Western states. Ginny also became involved in genealogy and joined the Genealogical Society of Chula Vista. Ginny also started volunteering at the Chula Vista Library in the Friends of the Library Bookstore. She worked in the bookstore once a week, and worked with the sorting crew every Tuesday. Her favorite day of the week was Tuesday when she got to work at the library and then go out to lunch with the Friends crew. Over the years Ginny has been involved with Friends of the Library Board and the Genealogical Society Board. She has been the President of the Civic Center Friends of the Library as well as President of the Genealogical Society.
Ginny was an avid collector of elephants, and has a huge collection of elephants from all over the world. Ginny loved to read, knit, quilt, garden, bird watch, and watch cooking shows. For the last two years, Ginny’s grandson Robert has lived with her, and one of their favorite activities was watching the Food Network together. Ginny also loved going to the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, and craft fairs. Ginny was a passionate fan of NHL hockey and enjoyed attending San Diego Gulls Hockey games with her daughters. Ginny also never missed watching the Indianapolis 500.
Ginny was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Chula Vista, and was involved with the United Methodist Women organization and the Quilt Circle.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Effie Bland of Zionsville, Indiana; siblings Onis, Beatrice, Crystal, and Myrtle; and former husband, Donald. Ginny is survived by her daughters, Pamela Chapman of San Diego and Debbie Taylor of Chula Vista; and grandchildren, Nicholas, and Robert.
Ginny is known for her quick wit, positive attitude, and her fierce independent nature. Everywhere she went, she made people laugh. Ginny lived life to its fullest.
A funeral service for Virginia will be held Monday, June 7, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 1200 East H Street, Chula Vista 91910. Following the funeral service will be a committal service at 12:30 PM at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, California 91902.
