In honor of our beloved friend, neighbor and exemplary citizen of Boston, Mary Josephine McLaughlin, a “memorial tea” is being planned approximate to the first-year anniversary of her passing on October 15, 2020. Mary Josephine McLaughlin of Boston, passed peacefully on October 15. Mary was born in Clamperland, Buncrana, County Donegal on January 22, 1937. Beloved daughter of the late Lizzie and Joseph McLaughlin. Mary immigrated to Boston in 1959 and settled in the Back Bay, where she became a neighborhood icon these past 61 years. Mary enjoyed the company of friends, a proper cup of tea and a good chat. She adored the Boston Red Sox and Elvis. Unfailingly kind and generous, she had an infectious smile and impish sense of humor. She was proud to become an American citizen while cherishing her Irish heritage. Mary avidly followed politics and participated in many campaigns: volunteering for JFK in 1960; marching in Washington for the ERA in 1978; volunteering for Bill Clinton. She held dear her right to vote. Mary is the eldest of 11. She was predeceased by her sisters Bridie McLaughlin and Elizabeth McDaid and her brother William. She leaves her much loved siblings: Margaret McCloskey, Anna Fahy, Josephine Doherty, Kathleen Robb, Hannah McDaid, James McLaughlin and Patrick McLaughlin. She also leaves 26 devoted nieces and nephews who will greatly miss their Auntie Mary. Her countless friends will forever hold close the deep affection she felt for all.
