John was born to John and Rita Ormond of Harwich in Norwood, MA on November 6, 1947. John grew up in Harwich and graduated from Harwich High School in 1965. He attended UMass Amherst and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in the spring of 1969. He joined the United States Air Force shortly after and trained to be a pilot. He was a fighter pilot of the F-4 Phantom and was a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam war.
After the war John worked as a flight instructor, a stunt pilot, and an airline pilot. He flew all manner of commuter airplanes for local carriers. He loved flying the old and slow DC-3. He would slide the side cockpit window open and fly with his elbow out the window. John completed his 20 years of military service and retired from the Air National Guard at Otis AFB. After his retirement he worked as a security officer for Hy-Line Cruises in Hyannis and on Nantucket.
John was a member of the Hyannis Elks, the VFW, the American Legion, and the Quiet Birdmen. John was a proud but humble pilot with a life long passion for aviation. His smile, laughter, quick wit, and jokes will be missed by many.
John is survived by his son Daniel, his sister Carolyn, and his brothers Paul and William.
Services celebrating John’s life will be held on Monday February 9, 2026 10:30am-1:00pm at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home at 40 MacArthur Blvd, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532, followed by a burial ceremony with military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at 1:45pm.
