October 10, 1942 - February 10, 2022
Lawrence (Larry) O’Neill was called to accompany our lord on February 10, 2022 after an extended and bravely fought series of illnesses. Larry, or “The Admiral” as he was lovingly referred to by his family and friends, was born in Hartford, CT, the eldest son of Vincent O’Neill and Helen (Daly). Larry possessed a strong sense of pride for his country, enlisting in the U.S. Army and later the U.S. Navy where he would obtain the rank of Quartermaster, serving onboard both surface vessels and later qualifying for submarine surface. Larry would spend the remainder of his active duty time assigned to the USS Angler during the Cold War. Upon his honorable discharge, Larry would spend several years navigating the civilian world, trying his hand at law enforcement and later finding his niche as both a successful business owner and entrepreneur. Even in his retirement Larry found himself still desiring a sense of service, eventually landing a job with the Department of Homeland Security (TSA) where he worked for several years.
Larry was never afraid of a challenge, no matter how daunting the prospects. Early on, his sense of adventure would find him and his young wife traveling 3,000 miles across the country from New Britain, CT to California where they would eventually settle in Napa, CA and raise their young family. No matter the distance Larry could not ignore the love he had for the East Coast and would return to Massachusetts every summer to spend time at his summer home on Cape Cod. With a deep affection for the ocean Larry could be seen on any given day sitting in his favorite beach chair taking in the sun, albeit against his dermatologist's recommendations.
To those who met Larry his physical stature preceded his kind and generous personality. Larry loved meeting new people and was never too shy to spark a conversation with a stranger or offer up one of his patented “Dad Jokes”.
While Larry’s professional accolades and achievements were a direct result of his unwavering work ethic, perhaps his greatest and most valued accomplishment was his loving family. Larry is survived by his loving wife Christine, with whom he spent over 50 years of devoted marriage; his son Sean O’Neill and his wife Elizabeth and daughter Sarah Wragg (O’Neill) and her husband James; His siblings, Joyce O’Neill, Stephen O’Neill and wife Jackie, Joanne Coy (O’Neill), and Dan O’Neill and his wife Wendy; nieces and nephew, Morgan Barr (O’Neill) and her husband Jason, Amy O’Connor (O’Neill) and her husband Tim, and Kevin and Joanne O’Neill; Larry who was lovingly known as “Bumpa” also leaves behind his grandchildren Nolan, Liam, Ellie, Leland, and Olivia. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Vincent and Helen, his daughter Pamela O’Neill, and his brother-in-law Dave Coy.
A visitation will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home (40 MacArthur Blvd, Bourne, MA) on Monday February 21st between 5:00-8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday February 22nd at St. Margaret of Scotland Church (141 Main Street, Buzzards Bay, MA) at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
