

Roland Joseph Dupont, 60, of Sagamore Beach died July 5, 2011 following heart surgery on May 31st. He was the husband of Charlotte Stiefel to whom he was married for 34 years. Born in New Bedford, MA he was the son of Joseph Armand Dupont and the late Eleanor Dupont. He was a 1968 graduate of New Bedford High School where he was active in the ROTC program. He went to college at UMass Dartmouth and received a B.S. in Marine Biology and then worked for Marine Research in Falmouth. He also worked for DW White as a construction mechanic and owned Sagamore Filter and Supply. He was a selectman for the Town of Bourne from 1993 to 1999. Earlier he served as chairman of the Finance Committee. He represented the town of Bourne on the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates where he eventually became Speaker; later he was appointed to an unexpired term as a Barnstable County Commissioner. His financial expertise and visions of the future led to the building of a new middle school in Bourne, the success of the Bourne Landfill and the building of the Barnstable County House of Correction at Otis. The scenic 3 Mile Overlook and park in Bourne was envisioned and created by Roland. He was a lifetime member of the Bourne Democratic Committee, an Eagle Scout and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his wife and father he is survived by 2 brothers: David Dupont of Coudersport, PA; Paul Dupont of Fairhaven; 2 sisters: Pamela Felker of Berkley, Lynne Nunes of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours are respectfully omitted and a memorial service will be held July 16th at 1:00 PM at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Main St. (Rt 6A) Barnstable Village.
