MA, formerly of Lowell, MA passed away on July 30th 2018.
He was born on September 9, 1925 to the late Vasilios Hantzes and Eleni (Philipopoulis) Hantzes.
He is proceeded in death by nine brothers and sisters: Zoe, Theodore. Penelope, Mary, Stella,
Christodoulos, Daisy, Georgia, Pota.
Savas was educated in the Lowell school system. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943,
and served in World War II. He separated in 1946, and remained active in the Naval Reserves.
He graduated from Suffolk University in June 1950, with a Juris Doctor degree. He was a
Member of the Massachusetts Bar and Federal Bar.
Immediately after Law School, Savas returned to Active Duty and was assigned to a Navy Combat
Unit in Korea.
He met and married Marina (Kosartes) Hantzes on March 15, 1952, who preceeded him in death.
He is survived by his three daughters, Helena (Ellen Slavin), Sophia, and Sarina (Hantzes) Waters,
(Gregory), his grandsons, Christopher Savas Waters, Nicholas Richard Waters
(Sarah Campbell Waters), and Justin Gregory Waters. He also is survived by cousins, nieces, nephews
and many friends.
Savas retired in 1974 at the rank of Navy Captain. He taught law at the United States Naval War
college in Newport Rhode Island. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal,
World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupations Service Medal (Asia Clasp), Service Medal, United
Nations Service Medal, Naval Reserve Medal, and Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medal, Combat
Action Medal, and Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star
Savas retired in 1974 and practiced law privately. He was the founder and first President of the Cape
Cod Chapter of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA). He was
active in the Orthodox Church. He was also active in the Republican Party.
He was an avid golfer, gardener and bridge player. Savas was known for his generosity, humor,
compassion and love for his family.
A Funeral Service will be held at 9:00am in the St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church located at 62 Main St. in Cotuit, Massachusetts.
Burial is scheduled to follow at 11:00am in the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Any who would like to attend and are not processing from St. Michael the Archangel are kindly requested to arrive at the National Cemetery for 10:30am.
