Dear Carol, 
It is now 4 years since you began your HEAVENLY journey.  I no longer say, "YOU LEFT US" because every day there are SO many reminders that you are very much STILL PRESENT in our lives...JADE MIST still influences the breed as descendents of your beautiful dogs stand out in the crowd  at the shows.  Your network of friends are now FRIENDS on facebook and social media as we go forward,  finding comfort & joy in the memories shared of YOU.  It seems fitting that TODAY, May 11th, is MOTHER'S DAY ! SO MANY PUPPIES ! It always seemed RIGHT that your loving face was the FIRST they'd see in their lives...THE BEST SHELTIE MOM, ever.

Dear Carol,
Yet ANOTHER YEAR has passed, THREE since you left on ANGEL WINGS.  I recall the painful news of your passing and STILL FEEL the void that it left in our lives.
 As time moves forward without your earthly presence, I marvel at the number of times I think of you ! Now it is THAT presence - PRECIOUS MEMORIES - that helps me ( and all who's lives you touched) get through the sadness of an anniversary date like THIS one. 
 In our MEMORIES, you are ALWAYS HERE.

Dear Carol,
Two years ago today you left on Angel wings to join Keith and your beloved Jade Mist Sheltie fur-kids in your Heavenly home. 
TODAY,  I join SO MANY who miss being able to hear your voice, share sheltie "stories" or pictures  or just know you will be there if we need advice...
TODAY,  I join SO MANY who on this day remember you with grateful hearts and still feel your presence EVERY TIME we look into those beautiful Sheltie eyes.
THANK YOU for the special way you touched our lives.

Boy do I miss Ms. Carol (grammy to my doggies).  She was one of the kindest people I have ever met.  Sure do miss her beautiful dogs inside and out.  They all had the best little personalities and were so beautiful in all their unique ways.  Can't wait to see you again in sheltie heaven for real.  Missed dearly.

My Mom and I met Carol for the first time in 2002, when we flew from Germany to the US to pick up a puppy from her.
This puppy became Moms soul dog and won many prices at German dog shows (see photo on the left, right was the 2nd dog from her)
Some years later, in 2007, mom and a friend returned and got 2 more puppies from Carol.
The last time we met her was in 2015, unfortunately she had no puppy at that time for us, so we took one from another breeder. But of course we met her, had lunch and spent some hours together. It was always a pleasure to talk to her. She was such a  great and kind person.
During all this time we always kept in touch, wrote emails from time to time, I sent some pictures of the dogs. 
We were shocked when she told us about her cancer years ago.
Carol, we will miss you!

Carol was a dear friend and mentor for many years. We met Carol and Keith in 1983, as we prepared to move to Virginia from Texas. She helped us obtain our first Champion, a Carlin son, who sired our first homebred Champion, who in turn sired our first OTCH.  Carol and I traveled together to many shows over the years, and more than once were so busy talking that we missed turns and exits, but always managed to get to the show safely and usually on time. Carol will be sorely missed.

I knew Carol for 20 years. And I was looking for a sheltie puppy on the Internet and I saw her Zachary. His face was so melting and beautiful. I purchased a Zachary puppy from breeders that she was mentoring and he became my all-time favorite heart dog. (See photo)

I stayed with Carol when I was visiting the East Coast from Alaska a couple of times. She was always such a gracious hostess and obviously loved her dogs very much. I always looked forward to seeing her at the national and it was a huge disappointment when she became ill and did not come as often. It just did not seem like a true national without Carol Howell. 

Her mark on the sheltie world was significant.  I am so grateful that I had dogs down from her lines.

We also shared a strong patriotic spirit together. I enjoyed our conversations and most especially appreciated her love for this nation. They don’t make very many people like Carol. She was the best!

Jade Mist Suntide, “Lucky”, was the sire of my first puppy from Carol many years ago.  I was such a novice in dog stuff, but she took a chance on me and I’ve considered her a friend since that time.  She really cared about her dogs, how they were doing, and what they were doing.  She was especially interested and excited when we started doing therapy work. She was proud of her “hospital dogs,” and always asked about their visits.  

Through the years, Carol has been very patient with my many questions, has shared in happy times and has been so supportive during the sad times.  I truly miss her. 

I first met Carol 2 years ago when my companion sheltie died from liver disease. I was very upset and went to Carol for some comfort and perhaps to get one of her puppies. I had heard so many great stories from other people and needed another sheltie. Carol was awesome. One of dogs had just had puppies while Carol was going through her treatment for cancer.  I got one of her male puppies and he is great. She was always willing to answer my emails and provided help when I needed it. Didn’t know Carol very well, but I am going to really miss her and her wisdom on shelties. 

I have known Carol for almost 40 years.  Our shared times, usually at her home, were wonderful educational experiences.  I enjoyed the warm environment Carol provided and the always beautiful shelties she would share with me during our visits.  I also bred a champion bitch to her magnificent “Dillion” and their union produced my beautiful Matt who became a champion.  In recent years, due to aging, our visits were over the phone as I live in Virginia.  Carol is an icon to sheltie fanciers nationwide and then some.  She is missed but what a legacy she left with her  Jade Mist line of shelties.


Carol was a long time friend of mine.  She got me into showing and breeding shelties and a mentor to me.  Carol always was there for anyone who needed her help (dog related or otherwise) and she was one of the kindest people I knew.  She was a very special person and loved by many.  I am so sorry for your loss.  She will always be a guardian angel to me.

Carol’s most lasting influence is all the dogs she provided to people as their companions.  There is a Jamboree held quite often where people that have Jade Mist puppies gather together and let their puppies play, the owners socialize, and they have food.  Carol often attended this jamboree.  
Carol also was willing to help many new people break into shelties and mentored several people.  She often sold some of her best to them to help them start their kennels.  Many of the current kennels and breeders of today have Jade Mist shelties in their pedigrees.  
Carol is survived by her sister, Nancy E Postlehwait, nieces Joan and Amy, and nephew Ron.  She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Keith in 1991, a brother, David in 2012, and a nephew Brian. She was greeted at the rainbow bridge by hundreds of shelties that she has bred or been “Grandma Carol.”  She is also missed by many friends and those she has mentored.  


Carol G. Howell, born Carol Adelle Gilbert, died of cancer on May 11, 2021.  Carol was born in Sacramento, California to Erwin A. and Hester Virginia (Almond) Gilbert on September 18, 1941.
	Carol met the love of her life, Keith Burroughs Howell, while attending University of California – Davis.  They were married August 17, 1963.  They moved to Carmel, California after graduation where Keith practiced as a veterinarian in an animal hospital.  Keith later transferred to Maryland where Keith worked for the state of Maryland.  They resided in Davidsonville, Maryland where Keith and Carol bred and exhibited Shetland Sheepdogs under the kennel name, Jade Mist Shelties.  Keith also showed horned Hereford cows.
	Carol’s first sheltie was bred by a classmate of Keith’s.  His name was “Robbie”.  He wasn’t a conformation dog but he did excel in Obedience in his short three years of life.  Carol and Keith attended many dogs shows and purchased many dogs from smaller unknown kennels.  None turned out to be the show dog.  They finally were offered a puppy by the best known breeder in California, Valerie Daniels of Dan-Dee Shelties.  They named the puppy Dan-Dee Study in Scarlet, “Susie.”  Just a few months later, Valerie offered Carol and Keith Susie’s dam, “Petite.”  Petite was Carol’s first champion in 1967, the start of many champions.  Susie is the foundation for Carol’s breeding program.
	Carol’s heart dog was one she had when Keith died of cancer in 1991, “Dillion”, otherwise known as Ch Jade Mist Beyond Tradition ROM.  He was the sire of 56 champions.  Carol also had other dogs that are on the ROM list: Jade Mist Memorandum,  CH Ilemist As you like it, Regalia Geneagle Keepsake, and Jade Mist New Sun Rising.  ROM means that the dog had to sire 10 or more champions or if a female, then 5 or more champions.
	

Carol was a good friend and one of my dog mentors.  Anytime I wanted to breed dogs and I needed to know stuff about dogs in the pedigrees, I would call Carol.  She was so knowledgeable.   She also was a good friend that would go out of her way to help you out if needed.  And she donated to so many causes.

She will be missed in the sheltie world.
