Eugene Gregorie Bujac, 91, of Annapolis, Maryland died peacefully on June 1, 2014 at Hospice of the Chesapeake-Tate House. Mr. Bujac was born in Cumberland Maryland on August 27, 1922. He attended Fort Hill High School before enlisting in the Army in 1940. He served with the 115th Infantry, National Guard 29th Division and participated in the Omaha Beach Landing on D-Day as a Staff Sergeant- Platoon Leader. After being wounded in July 1944 near St.Lo, France he was evacuated to England to recuperate. He rejoined his unit near Liege, Belgium in October 1944. After crossing the Ruhr River, he was severely wounded near Titz, Germany in February 1945. His combat service earned him the Purple Heart, four Bronze Battle Stars, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and numerous other decorations and badges.
After being discharged from the Army in 1946 he worked at a number of jobs in and around Cumberland, MD. In 1947 he joined the U.S. Post Office as a Railway Mail Clerk, which evolved into his assignment as a Transfer Mail Clerk at Pennsylvania Station in Baltimore, MD. He subsequently accepted a number of different positions in the Postal Regional Office in Baltimore which was moved to Post Office Headquarters, Washington, D.C. In 1961, he and his family moved from Catonsville, MD to Bowie, MD. They were one of the first families to move into the new Belair homes being built by Leavitt and Sons. In 1962, he was appointed Postmaster of Bowie by President John F. Kennedy. The rapid growth of Bowie demanded more postal services and Mr. Bujac was instrumental in managing the construction of a new Post Office to better serve the community. He later became the Operations Manager at the Prince Georges Sectional Center Facility and Postmaster of Hyattsville, MD before accepting disability retirement in 1972.
Mr. Bujac and his wife, Helen, remained in Bowie until moving to a one story home in Annapolis, MD in 1997. They were Charter members of the Christian Community Presbyterian Church of Bowie, MD, and they remain the longest continuous members of the church. He was a charter and life member as well as Past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Omaha Beach Chapter 7; life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion; the Bowie Elks; the 29th Division Association; National Association of Postmasters of the U.S.; and he was a Mason.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Helen; son, Gregorie & wife Cheryl; grandson, Brett & wife Meredith; great grandsons, Landon, Morgan & Wyatt, great granddaughter Piper; grandson Scott & wife Catherine, great grandson Brooks; son, Mark & wife Debrah; granddaughter Danielle & husband Lawrence Taylor; great grandsons Malik and Ethan, great granddaughters Sasha and Asiah; granddaughter Brieanne and great grandson Luke; and, granddaughter Jennifer & husband Matt Collins; daughter Julie Hesenperger & husband Robert; granddaughter Nichole & husband Chris Jordan; and grandson, Kevin, also survived by his sister Charlotte Dyer and brother Charles DeP. Bujac & wife Betty of Cumberland.
Viewings are scheduled for June 13, 2014 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home, 16000 Annapolis Road, Bowie, MD. And, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on June 14, 2014 at the Christian Community Presbyterian Church, 3120 Belair Drive, Bowie, MD.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Christian Community Presbyterian Church at 3120 Belair Drive, Bowie, MD .
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
