Mr. Kahler, a former Forestville, Maryland resident, was born in Herndon, Pennsylvania. He was a 1950 graduate of Mahanoy Joint High School in Dalmatia, Pennsylvania. After graduation he worked as a freight handler for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Harrisburg until the Spring of 1951, when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After basic training, he served the balance of his enlistment at Andrews AFB. After his discharge in 1955 as a Staff Sergeant, he went to work as a mail clerk at PEPCO. In 1956 he joined the CIA as a clerk-typist and later served through various middle management positions until retiring in 1988 as a budget officer with almost thirty three years of service. In recognition of his exceptional achievement he was awarded the CIA Career Intelligence Medal.
His hobbies included running, bicycling and swimming.
He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Forestville, Maryland and All Saints Lutheran Church in Bowie, Maryland.
His wife of 43 years, Teresa M. Kahler died in 1996.
Family members include one daughter, Mary T. Overton of Walkersville, Maryland, two sons, Mark D. Kahler and Robert E. Kahler of Bowie, Maryland; three brothers Neal L Kahler of Glendale, Arizona and the late Guy M. Kahler, Ernest F. Kahler; one sister the late Sandra E. Hallock. Mr. Kahler is also survived by four grandchildren.
