Mary Arleen Ankeney (nee Remic), 74, of Bowie, MD, died in a tragic accident on March 10, 2018. She was the beloved wife of Theodore Jay Ankeney and was widowed in 2017 after 52 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of two daughters, Rachel Thorn (Robert) and Alison Boyer (Michael) and the loving grandmother of Nicholas and Ian Boyer—all in the Seattle area. Arleen was born in Greensburg, PA, to Arthur Herman and Elizabeth Dorothy (Berardinelli) Remic and was the middle child of 3 daughters. She is survived by her sisters Elizabeth Kral (James) of Surprise, AZ/Steamboat Springs, CO, and Phyllis Saletta (Gary) of Irwin, PA.
She graduated from Franklin Area Joint High School in Murrysville, PA, in 1961. After graduation, she worked during the day while attending night classes at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1965, Arleen married her high school sweetheart, Ted, during his senior year of college. After graduation, they moved to Maryland where she took administrative jobs at the United States Department of Agriculture and then NASA. She later started her own business, Public Secretariat. After several years raising her two young daughters, Arleen returned to school. In 1985, she earned a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, degree in journalism from the University of Maryland. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the National Honor Society, and Kappa Tau Alpha, the National Journalism Scholarship Society. After graduation, she started a career in public relations and eventually founded the consulting firm, Ankeney & Associates.
Arleen was a member of the Goddard Garden Club for over 20 years and held several offices, including president. More recently, she joined the Paint Branch Garden Club. She was an avid flower arranger and won many awards for her designs. She was also active in the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs, serving as the president of District I, as well as the editor of the quarterly newsletter. She was involved in her community as the founder and president of the Woodlark Civic Association.
