David Allan Scribner passed away at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Florida on January 24, 2026 with his beloved wife, Susan, by his side. He was 79. With hope and courage, David valiantly fought a several year battle with pancreatic cancer.
David was born in Hartford, Connecticut and raised in South Windsor, Connecticut, where he graduated from South Windsor High School in 1964. He attended College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he joined the Navy ROTC program and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy upon graduation in 1968.
Realizing a lifelong dream of becoming a pilot, David attended Navy Flight Training in Pensacola, Florida. After graduation in 1969, David began his what was to become, 27 year career as a naval aviator. Good friends, camaraderie, flying and adventure is what David lived for and he found it in his Navy life. He flew SH-3 helicopters in anti-submarine and search and rescue missions. He served aboard the USS Forestall, the USS Saratoga and the USS Wasp. In 1988 David was assigned to the Pentagon where he was the Helicopter Program Manager. Following his Pentagon assignment, David was selected and nominated to attend the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and graduated in 1992. This was followed by his assignment to Commanding Officer of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Reserves which prompted his relocation to St Louis, Missouri. He retired from his Navy career as a Captain in 1995.
David’s deep love for his country, the military and flying guided his pursuits.
David was an avid athlete and loved the outdoors. In his retirement he enjoyed skiing, fishing, mountain biking and golf. His love of nature led him to bird watching and digital photography of birds in flight, Florida sunsets and flowers.
With a soft heart for animals, David was comforted by the warmth of his cats and dogs. He showed enduring love for all his furry kids but had an exceptional closeness with his Westies. David was often seen with two white Westies taking a morning or afternoon walk, frolicking on the beach or at the dog park.
David is survived by his wife of 33 years, Susan (Solomon) of Massachusetts. He leaves behind his sister Sandra Skawinski and was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and George Charlton and his brother Robert. David’s family wishes to acknowledge the special care of his cousin, Joni Blomberg, during the last few weeks.
