Henry "Hank" F. McCann Jr.

Henry (Hank) F. McCann, Jr., 85, passed away with his family by his side on August 5, 2024 in Sarasota.

Hank was a longtime Sarasota resident and graduated from Sarasota High School in 1957 where he was a clown in the Sailor Circus. He then went on to the University of Florida where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1964. He was a high school history teacher before joining the Woolworth Five and Dime store, where he retired after 35 years in retail management. After retiring Hank and his wife, Barbara moved to Key West where they opened Ben Franklin’s Island Crafts store. Hank and his wife Barbara lived in the Keys for over 20 years enjoying the “Conch Culture” and the many friends they made. He had many hobbies including his private pilot license and was a former volunteer Football Coach with Ringling Redskins Youth Football league in Sarasota. An avid animal lover, he volunteered with the Cat Depot and the Humane Society. He was known for his sense of humor and was a big Gator Football fan, he always helped anyone without judgement, believed in second chances and was “Firm but Fair”, both personally and professionally.

Hank was preceded by death in 2003 by Barbara, his wife of 36 years. He is survived by two daughters, Brenda and Son in Law, Paul Campbell and Karen “Ren” Michaux. 4 grandchildren, Madison and her husband Creighton Laster, Maverick, Chandler, and Anna. 4 great grandchildren, Blake, Logan, Mason, River and one more great grandson on the way, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family kindly ask donations be made in Hank’s memory to the Cat Depot 2542 17th Street, Sarasota, FL 34234.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
