

Jim proudly served his country as an active-duty Army Paratrooper and Army Ranger before retiring as a Major in the Army Reserves in Civil Affairs. Following his military service, he enjoyed a successful career with The Home Depot, Inc., retiring as the Director of Construction, Store Planning, and Maintenance. A lifelong learner and thinker, Jim was a member of American Mensa.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Louisiana State University in 1989, demonstrating his dedication to education and personal growth. In his leisure time, Jim found joy in creating stained glass art, a reflection of his creativity and meticulous nature.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Herschell and Pearl Whatley; his wife, Kaye Whatley; and his sister, Darlene Jenkins. He is survived by his fiancé, Margie Danahy; his children, Tiffany Makras (Pete Makras) and Brian Whatley; his granddaughter, Maddie Marty; his brother, Bill Whatley; and numerous nieces and nephews: Michelle, Scott, Dustin, Michelle, Tony, Aubrey, Ryan, and Sarah.
In honor of Jim’s memory, memorial contributions may be made to the Empath Tidewell Foundation – Hospice (3550 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239) or the Wounded Warrior Project (PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516).
Jim’s life was marked by service to others and a deep love for family. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
