John Gerhard, 84, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2025, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. A devoted family man, accomplished professional, and passionate golfer, John lived a full and generous life marked by dedication, integrity, and joy.
Born on April 7, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, John was the son of Valentine and Mary Ann Gerhard. He attended the University of Detroit High School and later earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Detroit.
John’s career began with Mobil Chemical Plastics Division, where he spent twenty-five years and rose to General Manager of the Northeast Region. He then transitioned into the legal sector as Executive Director of Nixon Hargrave Devans & Doyle, continuing after its merger into Nixon Peabody LLP until his retirement in 2007. Known for his energy, leadership, and mentorship, John built lasting friendships with colleagues and clients alike.
A lifelong Catholic, John was a member of Our Lady of the Angels parish in Lakewood Ranch. His faith guided his service to community organizations, including his role as chairman of the board for Easter Seals and his support of Wild Wings bird sanctuary in Pittsford, New York, home to a great horned owl named “Gerhard” in his honor. He also enjoyed working with The Bird House in Pittsford, where he combined his love of nature with community engagement.
Golf was one of John’s great passions. Introduced to the game at age ten, he went on to win a state championship in high school and later played some of the world’s most challenging courses across the United States, Ireland, and Scotland.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Gerhard; children Christine Gerhard and Matt Gerhard (Grace); Al Shonk (Della); stepchildren Jay Weidner (Megan), Michele Baier (Scott), and Kristen Weidner; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and sisters Virginia Walter, Joan Book (John), and Mary Elaine Dwyer (Tom). He was predeceased by his parents, Valentine and Mary Ann Gerhard.
Those who knew John will remember his devotion to family, loyalty to friends, generosity of spirit, and warm sense of humor. His legacy is one of faith, love, and joy—and he will be deeply missed.
The funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Angels (12905 SR 70 East, Lakewood Ranch, FL) on Wednesday, November 5, at 11:00 AM.
