Agnes Cora (Codner) Whitten, 82, of Brampton, Ontario, peacefully passed away on June 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on August 27, 1943, in Torbay, Newfoundland, Agnes married the love of her life, Paul, in St. John's. Together, they made the move to Ontario, where they raised their two boys and built a beautiful life.
Agnes spent many years in Toronto as a respected accounting manager at Lombard Insurance (now Northbridge Insurance), choosing to retire at the age of 62. This milestone gave her more time for the things she loved most. She found great joy in swimming, listening to music, and reading on her deck, but her happiest moments were spent with family—whether during regular Sunday dinners or on cherished trips with her sisters. Known for her sharp mind, she always welcomed a good debate and stayed deeply engaged with the world around her.
In her later years, Agnes faced mixed dementia with immense grace. Though the illness impacted her ability to communicate, it never dimmed her vibrant spirit or her profound love for her family.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul, in 2013. She is survived by her sons, Paul (Joanne) and Terry (Glenda); her grandchildren, Amanda (Ash), Jennifer (Shane), Charlotte (Collin), and Michael (Amanda); and her great-granddaughter, Amelia. She is also survived by her brother David and sisters Mary Evans, Marg Lavery, Stella Longstaff, Linda Cox, and Shirley Collins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Olive (Matthews) Codner; her brothers, Arch, Gordon, and George; and her sisters, Bernice Kelly and Lila.
Fulfilling her wishes, there will be no public service. Her family will gather privately to return her ashes to Newfoundland.
Returning Home
The books are closed, the music fades away,
And Sunday laughter echoes in the air.
Of all the blessings filling every day,
Your family was the greatest treasure there.
Through quiet years, as spoken words grew few,
Your grace remained, your spirit standing tall.
Beyond the silent struggles that you knew,
The love you gave was felt by one and all..
You held our hands, you watched your legacy grow,
From children’s steps to baby’s brand new sight.
And now, dear Mom and Nanny, it is time to go,
Back to the island shore and eastern light.
We bring you to the cliffside, high and steep,
Where ocean breeze and rugged pathways meet,
The very place you dreamed of futures deep,
Your journey's end, so gentle and complete.
Released into the place you loved the best,
Your scattered ashes catch the Atlantic wind.
We leave you here in beautiful, deep rest,
At peace with Paul, where dreams of old began.
