Elizabeth was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Barry; her parents James and Dorothy McCrea; and her brother, Charles. She was a wonderful mother to her large family that included six children – Barry, Nancy, Sharon (Doug), Maureen, Laura, and Paul (Sheryl) and a beloved grandmother to her fourteen grandchildren – Robert, Ryan, Leigh, Dakota, David, Paul, Andrew, Thomas, Christopher, Olivia, Madeline, Alexander, Cameron, and Eric, as well as their spouses, partners, and children. Finally, Elizabeth is remembered as a dear sister to Dorothy and sister-in-law to Betsy, Celia, and Clarice.
Born in Timmins, Ontario, on June 10, 1933, Elizabeth spent the first twelve years of her life in the mining town of Val D’or, Quebec. In 1945 her family moved to Toronto. Her high school years were spent at the Sacred Heart School of Montreal, where she made many lifelong friends.
Elizabeth’s future changed forever when she went out west to the Banff School of Fine Arts to participate in a summer program and met Barry, whom she would eventually marry. They settled in Brampton, Ontario, in 1965, where they built the rest of their lives together.
Over the years Elizabeth successfully juggled raising a family while taking on jobs at places like Hunt’s Bakery; jewellery stores Peoples, Mappins, and Canadian Gold; and finally, the Lottery Booth at the local mall. She was a wonderful artist and equally skilled at bridge, sudoku, and crossword puzzles. Elizabeth loved going to movies, watching sports on TV – especially curling and golf – and travelling, both to the family cottage and to destinations around the world.
Elizabeth was a pet lover, having given a home to many cats and dogs over the years, and her kindness extended to her backyard friends – the squirrels and birds she fed daily. She will be missed by her most recent rescue cat, Daisy, as they brought each other great joy in Elizabeth’s later years.
Elizabeth’s Catholic faith was very important to her, and she lived it both in her daily life and through her involvement in the church. She was a valued member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada (CWL) for 50 years and sang in the St. John Fisher Choir for over 20 years.
What people remember most about Elizabeth is and will continue to be her quick laugh and wicked sense of humour. She was kind to everyone she encountered and made each person feel special. Being in the presence of Elizabeth was like receiving a warm and comforting hug. It was a blessing to have been loved by her and we will always carry Elizabeth’s memory in our hearts.
