Words of Remembrance for Frieda 

Good afternoon, family and dear friends. For those of you who may not know me, I’m Steve and it’s my honour to speak on behalf of Frieda’s family.
First of all, thank you to everyone for your attendance today, it’s a reflection of the many people who were touched by Frieda’s long, full life. Additionally, a special thank you to the entire staff at Bramalea Retirement Residence, to Canes Community Care, to Sigma Care and to the St. Elisabeth palliative nurses for all your kind and gentle care and support, especially in the final two weeks of mom’s days with us.
Frieda was a devoted Catholic and was a member and supporter of this perish since about 1965 and up until she moved from her home on Beechwood Crescent when she became physically unable to attend. Through the years she faithfully attended almost every Sunday Mass and also many midnight Christmas Masses with her family.  With her two bouts with cancer, I have the believe that her faith helped to give her the strength and courage to battle though them both.
I’d also like to briefly touch on a few things about Frieda that I noted in my many years as her son-in-law…
She was a competitive athlete. Skilled at basketball, bowling, badminton and crokinole. In fact, there were a number of times in her 90s when she could be seen playing mini basketball and balloon badminton in the Atrium at Bramalea Retirement Residence and her skills and coordination were still there. It was amazing to see. Her competitiveness also was evident in playing board games, especially Yahtzee. She was amazing. She loved to play, we played very often and she WON, very often!  “Puff, puff, come on SIX!  Got it! Yahtzee!” 


Mom was also an incredible cook and baker, many times we would all fight over the last creampuff or butter tart. In fact, one special thing she used to do just for me was make three or four butter tarts without raisins, clearly identified with toothpicks sticking in them and she’d put them aside. Lucky me!  One other sweet specialty was her disappearing chocolate salami… it would somehow magically evaporate in the refrigerator! 
Of course, I can tell you now that the secret to her butter tarts was the shortening. And not just any shortening, Frieda was the Canadian spokesperson for Fluffo Brand shortening. In fact, she was heard to say one time when Larry supplied her with the subpar Crisco Brand. Quote “I can’t work with this!” Unquote. But hey, you can’t argue with the delicious results!
Her dinners were also delicious. Something I always loved was her bean soup with dumplings (made from fresh yellow beans from her backyard garden).  But, when she was making meals, there was always a set menu: Pork chops or ribs were served with homemade coleslaw, homemade cabbage rolls were served with mashed potatoes, barbecued steaks were served with fried potatoes and “schlop” (that’s Diane’s nickname for finally chopped Swiss chard or spinach in a cream sauce – it’s delicious, trust me on this). Dessert was often cinnamon rolls, fresh out of the oven. Man, those were the days!
There was one time she sent me down to her deep freezer to get something and when I opened it up, well let me tell you, you know when you watch The Price is Right and they’re giving away a freezer and they open it up and it’s full to the top with Swanson Hungry man dinners? Well, that’s exactly what her freezer looked like. It was full to the brim. Frieda would shrewdly shop for all the grocery store specials and put them in the freezer and they’d be waiting there for her. 


However, when we didn’t eat at her place, we would go to Swiss Chalet, which of course was one of our favourites I mean, who doesn’t love Swiss Chalet?  Even her brother, Uncle Martin, loved it there too.
At the end of the day, Mom really depended on me for one thing and one thing only:  Getting her TV back up and running. Calls could come in at any time of the day or night no matter where I was and I would have to be on the ready to tell her exactly how to get her TV back on. Now let me tell you, modern technology is not easy for today’s seniors and the system at Bramalea Retirement Residence is a complicated Bell satellite system which requires a programmed remote and it also requires sometimes rebooting the satellite box. And, I can see that maybe I’ve already lost some of you, but please don’t be embarrassed, technology like this is tough for all of us. I will sum it up by saying my experiences in helping Frieda with her TV kind of let me know what it’s like to guide the landing of a jumbo jet over a radio. Having said that, she followed my instructions to the letter and we got it working almost every time.
There so much more to say, so may more cherished stories and memories. 96 plus years is a wonderful long life that gave us all experiences with Frieda to remember for years and years to come.  She will be missed; she will be fondly remembered; she will forever be loved.

So happy Oma was able to share in the celebration of Julia and Miki’s wedding and attend special events the past few years.

Our sincere condolences to the young family. Joe and I have had the blessing of knowing Frieda for decades and Larry and Diane have shared many updates about their mother since we left Brampton. What a beautiful, kind woman she was.

From our travels together and festivities Oma was always willing to join in. Angela and Julia have been blessed to have had their Oma in their lives for so long. Thank you for the love and memories Oma. You will be missed.  Rest in peace.

Oma was fun loving. She never missed an opportunity to celebrate the good times and there were many I will treasure.

Oma was a wonderful mother in law
and grandmother. She was always supportive and loving with our daughters. We have fond and lasting memories of our times together with family.

Dear Di, Larry, Steve, Marty , Angela, Julia. We have known Freida for  almost as long as we've known you all. . I always admired her for how active she was in her earlier  years doing a multitude of activities  that kept her  young and active. She had a wonderful laugh and smile and loved to talk.We would meet her at  your weddings or family birthdays and she  was always so upbeat and fun to be around.. She would  occasionally come and spare at euchre and fit right in despite the age difference. Even recently  during Julia and Micki’s  wedding reception ,that she came to despite her mobility challenges ,we were able to have a lovely conversation . She will  be missed and will always stay in our hearts .Everybody loved Frieda . We are thinking of you all with love and  caring as you say goodbye to this beautiful mother and grandmother.

I met Frieda in the year 2000 when I retired and joined bowling at Brampton Bowling Alley on Beech Street.We bowled,played cards at the seniors club and went on bus trips.When she stopped coming to play cards I phoned her every couple of weeks to let her know what was going on at the club and with my life so that she would feel included and involved in what was going on..
