With hearts both heavy and lifted, we now celebrate the life of Hulbert Erskine Headley, a man who walked this Earth as a beacon of love, generosity, and selflessness. Born to Easton & Claudia on March 25, 1931, in the nurturing community of Venture, Saint John, Barbados, Hulbert's life was a tapestry of rich experiences that spanned across the globe, concluding its earthly chapter on July 5, 2025, in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Hulbert is survived by his beloved wife, Cecily Grant-Headley. She stood as his partner, friend, and confidante in the dance of life, whom he called his soulmate. His legacy continues through his children, Judith, Deborah, David, and Sean, a grandson Patrice, and many nieces and nephews. Hulbert, one of ten siblings—Sam, Enid, Violet, Dorothy, Philip, Cynthia, Noel, Edward, and John—has joined those who have passed, and is remembered by Cynthia, Noel, and John. Known by his nickname ‘Coolie,’ all were blessed to have shared in the laughter and love that Hulbert brought into their lives, creating a family tapestry rich with color and joy.
Hulbert's journey was both an intellectual and spiritual quest. He crossed the Atlantic to study microbiology in England. His journey led him to Montreal in 1967. He worked at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec as the Chief Technologist in Microbiology. In 1983, he relocated to Toronto, Ontario and worked as an evening supervisor in microbiology for MDS. Throughout his career, Hulbert consistently demonstrated professionalism and commitment while positively impacting numerous individuals.
A man of profound Christian faith, Hulbert lived by the words of the Apostle Paul: "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:13). His life was a testimony to this scripture, as he displayed an unwavering love for his family, friends, and community.
Hulbert's interests mirrored his community-oriented character and filled with joy. His long-time passion for bowling saw him become a treasured member of a Montreal Caribbean bowling league. Then upon his move to Toronto, he joined the Barbados Mixed League at Playtime Bowl. His love for the game eventually led him to a leadership position in the Brunswick Seniors League in Brampton. His presence became synonymous with camaraderie and sportsmanship.
Together with Cecily, Hulbert found rhythm and connection on the dance floor of the seniors' center, reminding us all that life is a dance of moments and memories. He showed us that grace is not just for the young but for the young at heart.
As we reflect on Hulbert’s life, let us turn to the words of renowned author C.S. Lewis, who said: "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." Indeed, Hulbert never stopped dreaming, never stopped caring, and never ceased to set new goals for himself and those he loved.
As we bid a physical farewell to Hulbert, his legacy endures. It lives in the dedication demonstrated through his work, and in the countless lives he touched with his generous spirit. Please join us on Tuesday July 15th, 2025, to give our farewells. A visitation will happen at 10AM and service will begin at 1PM. Hulbert Erskine Headley, you have run the race, you have kept the faith, and you have indeed fought the good fight. Rest now in the loving embrace of the Almighty, as we carry forward the light of your love and the inspiration of your life.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would appreciate any donations to the Walnut Foundation. An organization promoting men’s health with a focus on the black community. Hulbert, a prostate cancer survivor, worked closely with this organization that held an important place in his heart.
