It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Martin Reid Jarvie, who passed away peacefully following a brief battle with cancer. James was born on December 21, 1941, in Twechar, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. After completing secondary school, he began a five-year apprenticeship in the Scottish coal mines, where he trained as a Millwright, beginning a long and dedicated working life defined by skill, determination, and a strong work ethic. Following his apprenticeship, James joined the Scottish Merchant Navy, where he spent four years as a Third Engineer with the Ben Line, a shipping company based in Edinburgh. His years at sea took him around the world, with voyages to Germany, Belgium, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Borneo. The cargo ships sometimes carried passengers as well, and these years gave James the opportunity to see parts of the world far beyond his home in Scotland. In 1966, James married Marjory Joan Cobban in Kirkintilloch, Scotland, near Glasgow. The following year, in 1967, he left the Merchant Navy and emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he began a new chapter of his life and started working at Victory Soya Mills Silos. In 1970, James and Marjory began their family and welcomed the birth of their daughter, Linda, followed, a year and a half after by their son, James (Jamie). Three years later, they moved to Bramalea, Ontario, where they purchased their first home. That house became the heart of their family and remained their home for the next 53 years, a place filled with family memories, celebrations, laughter, and love. James was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He and Marjory shared 60 years of marriage, building a life together in Canada while never losing their connection to their Scottish roots. He had a great love of life and a wide range of interests. He enjoyed fishing, watching old movies, exploring history, and reading a good book. His love of music was as varied as his interests, ranging from Beethoven to the Beatles, to Tony Bennett, and everything in between. He was a devoted supporter of the Glasgow Rangers Football Club and had a particular appreciation for poetry, especially the works of Scotland’s beloved poet, Robert Burns. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Marjory, his son James (Jamie) and daughter-in-law Juliet (née Mayer); his daughter Linda and son-in-law Duilio; and his four cherished grandchildren, Natalie, Benjamin, Avery, and Emmett. James will be remembered for the life he built through hard work and perseverance, for the adventures he had at sea, for the family he loved so dearly, and for the many years he shared with those closest to him. After a life that began in a small village in Scotland and took him across the seas to a new home in Canada, James leaves behind a lasting legacy in the family he created and the lives he touched. He will be deeply loved, forever remembered, and greatly missed. Rest peacefully, Dad. Your journey is over, but the love and memories you gave us will remain forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Andrews Community Funeral Centre, 8190 Dixie Road, Brampton, Ontario, on October 18, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
