My beloved and eldest sister Mary was third in line out of six siblings.  The close attachment I had with her, goes a long way since my early teens, and with both of us sharing the same birth month and horoscope we got along very well indeed.

To me as a person, Mary possessed some excellent qualities and virtues.  To begin with, she proved to be a very dedicated wife, cared for her dear husband with fond affection for many years in the Nursing Home till the very end.  Always loving, very caring, sharing and forgiving, unceasingly generous, and above all, prayerful and devoted to her faith and trust in God.

As time went by, Mary was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer.  She battled with it for the last five years with patience, courage and a positive attitude.  Tender, compassionate and simple was her living, and lived fully the way she wanted to.

Mary my dearest, three running years, you visited me and my family in the US. The fond memories of the three days of "quality time", you wanted to spend with me alone out of your weeks' stay last August/September, will linger within me for years to follow.  God raised you now to eternal bliss.

Rest in the Peace of the Lord.

Robert, Hedy, Albert and Iris, just can't believe that Mary is no more. However, she is in a much better place with no pain and suffering. I still think our phone will ring soon with a kind message from Mary but it's wishful thinking. God bless her soul and we continue to pray for the repose of her soul. We are so sad that our dear Sister Mary is no longer with us.  We miss talking to her and her tell us how she spent her day.  She had a strong spirit in a weak body, a brave little woman that did not let her weak body dominate her.  She lived her life the way she wanted, fiercely independent with no time to bother or to be a burden to anyone.  A 'trooper' indeed in the real sense of the word.  We will always love you fondly Mary and will always miss your presence.

The word togetherness is a beautiful word with a deep routed meaning that exists between two loving people devoted to each other in life.  This word was the theme Mary set for her life when she first met Henry in Karachi, and this word is on Henry’s marker on his grave today.

In my early years in Canada when I was depressed having left the good life back in Karachi, Mary was my comfort, my strength, my hope, my consolation.  She pushed and motivated me to go out and look for a job in a very gentle way.  She was instrumental in getting my first job in a men’s clothing chain.  Never forget that day.  She and Henry taught me how to use the TTC and I remember how I used to get very upset whenever she mentioned to me about taking the north/south/east or west direction on the TTC.  But she and Henry told me very clearly, “That’s the way it is here in Canada, and get used to it”.  I knew then she was my backbone.  

Then suddenly life threw her a curve ball.  Henry suffered some multiple strokes and eventually after a few years wound up in a nursing home.  Mary would relentlessly, unceasingly, faithfully go day in, day out to give him her loving, personal care regardless of the toll it took on her.  She would wake up very early in the morning, go to work in Mississauga, come home around four or five (can’t remember) and rush straight to the nursing home everyday.  Despite all of this she managed to put on a smile and to maintain her tremendous sense of humour.  This brings to mind a conversation I had with Mary some time ago.  She would often tell me about an elderly gentleman she would meet in church every Sunday.  They got to be talking and he would quite often ask her to spend time and get together with him.  She told him that she was devoted to her family and that her family was very devoted to her.  Then one day I asked Mary, “What happened to that elderly gentleman that she used to speak of?”  She responded, “He moved somewhere out west to be with his family.”  I asked her if she gave him a picture of herself?  She said, “No”.  I asker her “Why not?”.  Her response was, “I was afraid he would hold it in his hand and walk down the aisle!” 

Then Henry was called out his suffering and Mary went on with her life.  She was very independent and never asked us for help.  She always told us that “We have our own obligations to our families.”  Her sense of consideration toward the family was immense.      

One day life threw her another curve ball.  This time she got hit badly.  It need hardly be said that the treatment of this disease can bring any person down physically and mentally, and as we all know she was living on her own downtown.  She fought this illness bravely and courageously for five years, hoping that one day she would be healed.  Her faith was immense.  Mary had a strong will to live life, and she lived it the way she willed.  She never gave up hope.  Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out the way we expected and that’s why we are here today.  

As your family here we walked your life with you through your difficult times every opportunity that came our way and we know your smile never left your face and   you know that we as a family went through our times of stress and anxiety and we came to you.  There were times when we gave you our troubles, you gave us your courage; we gave you our sorrows, you gave us your joy; we gave you our weakness, you gave us your strength; we gave you our sadness, you gave us your gladness; we gave you our emptiness, you gave us your fullness in life.  

Now the record clearly shows that you took the blows, you stood tall and did it your way.  We are so proud of you.  So Mary in your passing away you have finally accomplished your theme in life, and met your goal of achieving that eternal togetherness with Henry now and forever.  We love you Mary, rest in peace, until we meet in the resurrection.  

I would like to thank the Pastor and staff of St. John of the Cross Parish for consenting to give us this sacred space to celebrate the life of our sister Mary.  I would like to thank Msgr. Terrance for taking his time to celebrate Mass for our sister Mary.  Above all I thank all our relatives and friends that have taken their time to be present for this service.  Please note that after the service at the gravesite, everybody is welcome to meet with the family for refreshments in the cemetery reception centre.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Our Heartfelt condolences go out to ALL the D'Souza/Castelino Family. We have had a very long and wonderful relationship with both Mary and Henry. It was just 2 weeks ago that we were so delighted to meet each other at a wedding celebration. God in His infinite mercy has finally relieved her of her suffering. Never ever did we hear her complain about her sickness. She just suffered in silence. May Her Soul Rest in Peace. And God give you all the strength and the courage to bear your loss.
