uncle dando...

my childhood was filled with stories about your arnis and combat judo exploits. but my most memorable one was about your graduation from training from your old master, tony. it was in an old warehouse and at midnight without lights. others have gone ahead of you. but they failed to come out at the rear door upon entering through the main entrance. then it was your turn. you jumped,  kicked and rolled through the entrance door. unlike the others who entered very cautiously. then started your journey with the 12 masters of arnis and combat judo. each master had a secret on how to defeat you. parry, defense, attack and counter attack were the order of the graduation night. then all of a sudden you were face to face with the 12th master - an arnis master. again, attack and counter attack ensued between you. As the 12th master was tiring, you suddenly felt that he was going to deliver the death blow to your head. the death blow came and you were able to parry the blow. After parrying the blow and as you were ready to counter attack, the 12th master stood still and said that you may pass. as you exited the rear door, all the masters were there as well as tony who said "you are the 13th master."

the Master of all masters has now called you to join Him in His kingdom. you deserve to be there uncle dando and may your family be blessed.

to you uncle dando, you will always be THE 13th MASTER.

Eulogy for Rolando G. Manrique

His name is Rolando Grimaldo Manrique.   In our family, we call him Dando.   He was born on May 11th 1939 in Daet, Camarines Norte in the Philippines.  He would have celebrated his 74th birthday this coming Saturday, May 11th.   He is the 5th child in the family of 14 children.  

He grew up in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines.  He was a healthy, strong, and robust person.  As a teenager, his passion was martial arts and self-defense.  This passion came from his desire to defend himself against bullies and any surprise physical attacks.

After graduating from high school, he went to Manila determined to learn martial arts.  He lived with our cousin who introduced him to an old man named, Tony, who was an instructor and expert in “Arnis” and Combat Judo.(Arnis is a Filipino style of self-defense using a wooden and rattan made stick).  

Dando enrolled in Tony's class and devoted most of his time and efforts in learning everything Tony taught him.  It took him more than a year to finish the training.  Finally he finished it with high grades.  In his praise, Tony said, “Dando was one of the best students in martial arts that he had ever taught in his life”.

Dando returned home to Iriga City very proud and happy because his dream came true – he was rated as a “Black Belt” in Arnis and Combat Judo.  He then became an instructor in martial arts just like his teacher Tony.

Since teaching martial arts was not a profitable career, our Father, who was the Manager of Bicol Trading Inc., a large company that specialized in all kinds of auto spare parts, especially American and Japanese cars,gave Dando a permanent job as storekeeper.  Our Father taught him all about auto spare parts.  

As a fast-learner, Dando eventually became the Head Storekeeper in one of the branches of the company.

After several years with the company, Dando decided to go to college to earn a bachelor's degree.  He worked full-time and went to school at night.  However, he was not able to finish college because that was the time that our sister, Josefina, successfully sponsored him, and he immigrated to Canada. 

He arrived in Toronto, Canada in June 1971, and immediately secured a job with Nissan Company due to his job experience in the Philippines.  He sponsored Evelyn, his fiancée, and five months later they were married.  They have two children, Ann and Jeanette, and two grandchildren, Phillip and Isaac.

In Canada, his name became ROLLY.  He worked for Nissan Auto for 28 years and held the position as Parts Specialist until he retired at the age of 60.

The one thing that is very important to know about Dando is that:   wherever he went, martial arts was always a part of him. He never stopped trying to impart his expertise in martial arts, especially Arnis and Combat Judo. 
 
This is part of his legacy and one that he imparted to our youngest brother, Javier, as well as to his nephews and nieces and son-in-law.  

Dando was rated as a “Black Belt, 3rd Don”. He is a member of Arnis Canada Inc.; The International Philippines Martial Art Federation; and The Japan Karate Association International.

Rolando, Dando, Rolly was a religious man, a member of the Couples for Christ, and a humble and loving person.  He was a good husband, a good father and grandfather, as well as a good son, brother, and uncle.

He was a good man!  And he lived a good life!  We, his family and siblings love him and are proud of him.  We will miss him so much.  We will miss his warmth, humor and laughter.

I learned about your terminal illness when the family was requesting prayers for your speedy recovery, I even asked my husband for a prayer brigade in our Spirit of Love Community (SOLCC). I've always included you, Auntie Nene and Auntie Naying during my Sunday mass service, and I thought my prayers for you are working but suddenly the news broke out that you've gone ahead the allotted time. It is unbelievable for me as we are miles apart to see your physical condition. But it is always God's will that prevails, not ours. We are just His instruments to carry out His plans and we need to obey.

Thank you for the love and care you've given to Papa during your growing up years and for being a very good brother to him. Papa will always cherish the good times and memories you've shared with each other. You had been miles apart for many years, but I know it was enough for him to know you're already in good hands this time, embraced by God's mercy, peacefully and eternally.

Thanks for sharing us your time, I had fond memories of you when I was a kid during your first vacation from Canada with Auntie Belen and Ann Vee. And that's enough for me to cherish your good memories as my father's caring and loving brother! Goodbye and rest in peace Uncle Dando! I'll continue praying for your peaceful travel to heaven with Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

     Rolando aka Rolly aka Dando aka Lando aka Guy is now in paradise with our Lord Jesus Christ.  To me he was not only a brother; he was a  friend, a protector, and a confidant. When I was with him I always felt that nobody could hurt me; my sense of security was overwhelming because it stemmed from the knowledge that he had mastered the art of self-defense and that he would lay down his life for me if circumstances would demand it.

     Guy, thank you for being always there for me and thank you for the years that we spent together.  Those were wonderful years particularly the times when serenading had not yet lost its appeal.

     Guy, I'm the only surviving member of the ROMERO TRIO (ROlando, MEdardo, ROmeo) and this fact will somehow make my remaining years lonelier and less bearable, but life must go on, so I request you and Romeo to please watch over me until our Lord wills it that the three of us should be together again.

You were an admirable, selfless second dad I will always look up to.  You welcomed me into your family without hesitation and I will forever be greatful for that. Our sincere condolences to all the Manrique family. We will remember him as a warm and loving person who touched our lives too by his kindness and faith in God. We will miss his voice singing in the choir on Sunday mornings.

"Uncle Dando", as we call him is not only my father's brother but singing buddy as well. The first and the last time I saw him was in 1993/1994 when he came here in the Philippines with Auntie Belen and Ate Jeanette. Their homecoming became a family reunion and until then, we didn't have the chance to see him anymore in person. It was in 2007/2008 when we had a conversation through Yahoo! Messenger and my father was really happy to see him. They even spoke in the local dialect and they way he speaks, I thought, he still loved being a Filipino; he still loved being a Bicolano (he's from the Bicol Region of the Philippines). 

I may not have had many memories with him but I became close with my cousin, Ate Jeanette though we have only seen each other when she came here in year '93/'94. But through the modern technology, we keep in touch. Seeing Ate Jeanette and Ate Ann, I can say that Uncle Dando is really a good person... a good father. And based on my dad's stories, he's a good brother.

Rest in peace, Uncle. You'll forever be in our hearts.

I went to the hospital today and was sad to learn that Rolly had passed on. I met two caregivers from St. Marguerite d'Youville while at the religious ministers' office at the hospital and asked them to add Rolly's name in the prayer for the deceased at their Church's Masses. I trust you have already done so at St. Anthony's Church. I said a Divine Mercy chaplet at the hospital's chapel for Rolly. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences, Evelyn, and to your family.
