My deepest condolences.
Tak was my teacher at Centennial College back in the 70's as well as my employer at Brian Atkins Architects.
Both were some of the best people I had ever met - often thought about Tak and Brian.
May he rest in peace.

Dear Auntie Jean, Karen and Ray,
Our deepest sympathies.  We have many fond memories with Uncle Tak that we will always cherish.  We will always remember how much it meant to us that you all were part of our wedding celebration in Hawaii and also graciously allowed us to host our reception in your lovely home.  One of our fondest memories is the Canada Day celebrations that we shared with all of you and how Uncle Tak always brought sparklers for the kids to enjoy.  He will be sadly missed.

Tak left us this past Wed., right around his normal starting time for Men's Day. He had a 2:30 starting time with Sudsy.
He always arranged starting times for most of us, as well as golf trip itineraries.  If it wasn't for Tak there wouldn't have been any golf trips.
I was so priveleged to have had Tak as my best friend for over 40 years.
I'm sorry that we could not have spent more time with Tak these last few months, as both Bonnie and I were dealing with medical issues.  Danny Gale filled that gap and I sincerely thank him for doing so.
Tak touched many lives at this club.  He was Brampton Golf Club.
I'm sure most of us would have a story to tell concerning Tak.
My most memorable was about 30 years ago and was a testment to his unwillingness to give up.
We were a fivesome playing in late November or early December.  The group consisted of Doug Elliot, Ralph Corbridge, Peter Maciazzyk, Tak and myself.
We approached the 16th hole only to find out the bridge spanning the Etobicoke Creek was removed, leaving only 2-4" I beams crossing the creek.
The icy waters were angry that day my friends.
I had advised the group that this is not a problem as I crossed these beams last year carrying my golf cart & bag.
Ralph said no way, and proceeded to Kennedy Road.  Doug Elliot proceeded to the bridge crossing the 17th hole.
Tak, Peter & I proceeded down the hill in order to cross via the I beams.
I coached Tak by saying once you get started walking the beam to keep moving.  However, he stopped halfway in order to regain his balance.  He did a few wobbles on this narrow beam before he decided to rest his clubs on the adjacent beam.  The bag of clubs would not reach the beam and the weight of them caused him to jump to the adjacent beam wherein he did a few more wobbles before plunging into the icy waters below.
Tak then proceeded to go back to shore at which point I said the hole is that way.
He said oh you're right.  He then proceeded to the direction of the 16th green soaking wet with icycles forming on his eyebrows.
Water was spewing out of the little drain holes at the bottom of his bag.
To make a long story short Tak went par, par, par on these last 3 holes, only to win all the bets with presses.
That was probably the only time that I was glad to have lost money to Tak.
His determination that day was unprecedented.
Tak loved action 9's and seemed to always win.  I would say about 90% of the time.
I once asked Tak what home was.  He replied that it was a place you go to when the golf club closes.  Only kidding.
Tak had a special love of trees as they were his friend.  They were forever spitting his errant shots back into play.
I hope that this membership can dedicate a special tree in a strategic location so that we may say that's the TANAKA tree I just hit, or got by safely.
There's a good group waiting for you Tak including, Sudsy, Burgie, Jimmy, Arthur, Bill McMahan, Doug Elliot, Jack Marshall, Ray Johnson, Bruce Darling, Bruce Scott, Chick Gibson, Austin, Jake, Kenny Trowbridge, Norm Lang, Gord Vivian and hundred's more.
A lot of our final days will be made bearable knowing we will one day be reunited with Tak.
Tak was blessed to have had Jean as his wife, and Karen and Laurie as his daughters, and in this past couple of years Ray as his son-in-law.
Tak will now have time to read Mondo's book.  He will be able to pass on important information to Sudsy and Burgie, who left us before the book was published.
Winston Penny sponsored many of Taks Trips south.  Winston will now have to look for another recipient of his kindness.
I could go on for much longer as there are so many fond memories of being with Tak.
I must close by saying a final goodbye to a wonderful man.  
I know you will have booked a starting time the moment we reunite.

There are few people who come into our lives who make a lasting impression - Tak was a man of soft spoken words yet everyone heard him.  He possessed super strength and a will to live his life to the fullest.  In the passing of Mr. Tak Tanaka, for the membership who knew him, he will be remembered for his honour, integrity, good sportsmanship and friendship.  His legacy will live on in our hearts each and every day.  He was and will be a leader to all of us.

To The Tanaka Family, 
I wrote a short story on my friendship with Tak.  He was one of my first friends at the Golf Club, and I hope this helps to honour his memory. 

My First Day Golfing With Tak

It was a beautiful spring day.  I was about 12 years old and on the driving range at the Brampton Golf Club, hitting golf balls on the driving range beside my Dad. I was fairly new to golf, and was clearly struggling to make any sort of good contact; on the other hand, my Dad was hitting most of his shots dead straight, with relative ease.  We continued to swing away, when Mr. Tanaka drove past the driving range in a cart– surely on his way to the 10th tee for an action nine.  Some hollering ensued, with my Dad inviting Tak to play with me in the upcoming Junior/Senior tournament.  “Sure, I'll play” he said.  And off he went.  I kept quiet and continued to swing away as hard as I could, hoping I would figure out how to golf in the next couple weeks…
 The day of the tournament came up, and I made my way to the Golf Club.  I signed in, collected my scorecard and started copying whatever warm-up routine the rest of the Juniors were doing.  I finished warming-up and went down to the Lounge, hoping to find Tak and maybe a sandwich.  After devouring my sandwich, I eventually worked up the courage to enter the “men's lounge”, only to find Tak surrounded by his friends after his morning golf game.  I quickly learned you could never tell how well Tak did after his rounds – he was always in a good mood and his scorecards were impossible to read.  He was happy to see me though, and told me to put my bag on his cart.  We were quickly told the format for the day, some sort of alternate shot format with a twist, and off we went.  I don't think Tak really payed attention though, as I vividly remember him racing a birdie putt a long 5 feet past the first hole.  “Okay Michael, tap it in” he joked…   How easy he made it sound…  With my entire body feeling pressure, I somehow made the putt.  We made a par, net birdie, and were off to the races.  
 The rest of the front nine went great.  Tak would hit his cut down the middle, I would try to find the green, he would lag it (after sensing my first green jitters) and I would close my eyes and tap it in from there.  Watching Tak golf for the first time was something else.  Before every shot, he would take 3 fierce waggles at the ball, letting it know if it didn't do what he said, punishment was coming.  Fortunately for the ball, and unfortunately for Tak's opponents, the ball usually did what he asked it to do.  
 We made the turn in great shape. Feeling relieved, I hit one of my few good shots on the 10th tee, allowing Tak a shot to the green, which he of course made.  I somehow drilled a 40 foot putt up the green and into the back of the hole for a birdie, net eagle. I could see Tak was into it now, always the competitor.  We continued to ‘ham & egg' the rest of our round, and upon finishing we found out we won.  What a day!  Another feather in Tak's cap, but extra special to me, as it was my first golf tournament win.  
 As the years went on and I spent more time at the club, I always enjoyed my time with Tak. We always joked to each other that one of us should get a real job, and that if Tak was my caddie I would be making the big bucks…    He always encouraged me to play smart golf and work on my putting – great advice that help me win my own tournaments down the road.  Tak will always be remembered for his great golf and friendship.

WE ARE HERE TODAY TO PAY OUR LAST RESPECTS AND TO CELEBRATE 
THE LIFE OF AND TIMES OF OUR DEAR FRIEND, TAK TANAKA.

TAK LIVED AN AMAZING LIFE, EVEN THOUGH, BY TODAYS STANDARDS,
IT WAS RATHER SHORT. 

HE COULD BEST BE DISCRIBED AS A GOLFER WHO PRACTISED ARCHIITECTURE FOR A LIVING

TAK WAS A GREAT FRIEND TO ALL WHO KNEW HIM   . HE WAS THE FRIEND WHO WAS THERE WHEN YOU NEEDED SOMEBODY TO BE THERE.

I WELL REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST JOINED BRAMPTON GOLF CLUB, MEETING TAK AND HITTING IT OFF IMMEDIATELY. IT WAS NOT LONG BEFORE I WAS INCLUDED IN HIS CIRCLE OF FRIENDS. WITHIN THIS CIRCLE IT QUICKLY BECAME APARRENT THAT  TAK WAS THE GLUE THAT HELD IT TOGETHER.

I CANNOT EVER REMEMBER TAK SPEAKING BADLY OF ANYONE. IN FACT, IT WAS THE OPPOSITE. HE FOUND SOME GOOD IN EVERYONE. TAK WAS THE PEACEMAKER, THE EQUALIZER.

THERE ARE ONLY A HANDFULL OF PEOPLE WHO COME INTO OUR WORLD AND TOUCH OUR LIFE IN A DRAMATIC FASHION. 

SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ARE JUST FLICKERS OF LIGHT, WHILE OTHERS ARE CONSISTENT GLOWS THAT LAST A LIFETIME..

TAK WAS JUST THAT, HE WAS MY CONSISTENT GLOW. HE WAS ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS FOR CLOSE TO 25 YEARS. NOW HE IS NO LONGER HERE AND I STILL CANNOT BELIEVE HE IS GONE.

IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE STANDING ON THE FIRST TEE ON A WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON OR A SATURDAY OR SUNDAY MORNING WITHOUT HEARING TAK ASK, WHAT'S THE BET? 2 4 4  TWO GAMES BEST BALL AND HIGH LOW AUTOMATIC PRESS 2 DOWN? . INDIVUADS ALLROUND? HOW IT THE HELL HE KEPT SCORE  OF ALL THE GAMES, ONLY HE KNEW.

NOW WHEN I THINK OF TAK? I BELIVE EVERYONE WHO KNEW HIM VERY WELL WOULD AGREE WITH ME THAT TAK, IN MANY WAYS WAS A PRIVATE MAN WHO LIVED HIS LIFE BY THE SAME PRINCIPLES AND STANDARDS AS THOSE HE APPLIED TO THE GAME OF GOLF. LOVE FOR HIS FAMILY, HONESTY,   COMPASSION, GREAT SENSE OF FAIR PLAY,   RESPECT FOR HIS COMPANIONS, BE THEY MALE OR FEMALE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, TO NEVER EVER GIVE UP.

TAK WAS NOTHING, IF NOT ONE OF THE GREATEST GRINDERS OF THE GAME, EVER TO WALK THE FAIRWAYS OF BRAMPTON.

NO ONE COULD EVER COUNT HIM OUT OF THE GAME AND GOD HELP ANY PARTNER WHO COMPLAINED THE GAME WAS LOST.

TAK'S TRIUMPH'S ON THE GOLF COURSE ARE LEGENDARY AND SOME DOWNRIGHT HILERIOUS. 

WE ALL KNOW OF TAK'S SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DEITY BUDDA. HOW MANYTIMES WHEN A PUT FROM 35 FEET LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO MISS WHEN BUDDA'S HAND WOULD APPEAR, GRAB THE BALL AND PULL IT INTO THE HOLE.

HOW MANY TIMES HIS ERRANT SHOT WOULD FLY INTO THE TREES ONLY TO FLY BACK OUT AND LAND ON THE FAIRWAY?

EVEN WHEN THE BALL LANDED IN THE TREES AND NO SHOT SEEMED POSSIBLE, TAK WOULD DRESS THE BALL MAKE A SWING, LO AND BEHOLD, THE BALL WOULD APPEAR ON THE FAIRWAY, IF NOT THE GREEN.

IN FAIRNESS TO TAK, HE NEVER TOOK CREDIT. HE KNEW WHEN BUDDA PLAYED HIS PART AND GIVE THANKS AND CREDIT TO WHERE IT WAS DUE.

I RECALL ANOTHER OF TAK'S ENDEARING QUALITIES ON HOW TO DEAL WITH AWCKWARD SITUATIONS.  

WE WERE IN NORTHERN FLORIDA, SUDSY, TAK, WINSTON, AND MYSELF. TO PLAY A FAMOUS COURSE WILDWOOD (I THINK THAT WAS THE NAME)WE STOPPED AT THE PRO SHOP TO REGISTER AND WERE TOLD OUR TEE TIME WAS RUNNING 20 MINS; LATE. WE WERE ADVISED TO GO TO THE PUTTING GREEN AND THE STARTER WOULD COME FOR US WHEN THE TEE WAS OPEN.

THIS WE DID AND AFTER A SHORT TIME THE STARTER APPEARED. HE ASKED FOR THE NAME OF OUR GROUP. AS I WAS THE CLOSEST I INFORMED HIM WE WERE EITHER THE TANAKA GROUP OR SOUTHERLAND GROUP.

HE BECAME AGGRESSIVE AND REQUESTED I FIND OUT WHICH BLOODY GROUP. I ASKED TAK WHOSE NAME THE BOOKING WAS UNDER. HE REPLIED HIS, TANAKA. I PASSED THIS ON TO THE STARTER WHO ASKED ME TO SPELL THE NAME WHICH I DID.

HE THEN PROCEEDED TO BERATE ME LETTING ME KNOW WE ARE 15 MINS; LATE AND THEREFORE MISSED OUR STARTING TIME. 

I TOLD HIM IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, THE STORY FROM THE PRO SHOP AND THAT WE WERE ONLY FOLLOWING THE PRO SHOP'S INSTRUCTIONS AND THAT HE SHOULD GET THE FACTS RIGHT BEFORE BEING RUDE TO CUSTOMERS. HE WOULD NOT LISTEN AND DAMANDED THAT I GET OUR GROUP READY AND HE WOULD COME BACK.

TAK ASKED WHAT THAT WAS ALL ABOUT, SO I TOLD HIM. TAK THEN PROCEEDED TO LAY THE BLAME ON ME SAYING I WAS RUDE TO THE MAN AS AFTER ALL. HE WAS ONLY DOING HIS JOB. AND ENDING THAT I SHOULD BE MORE CAREFUL IN HOW I SPEAK TO PEOPLE. 

WHILE TAK WAS SPEAKING TO ME THE STARTER RETURNED, HIS DEMENOR HAD NOT CHANGED; HOWEVER, TAK, BEING THE PEACE MAKER TOOK UP THE CONVERSATION WITH HIM (MYSELF, HAVING ALREADY BEEN TOLD) I STOOD BACK TO WATCH THE MASTER IN ACTION.  HE ADDRESSED THE STARTER WITH THE PREFIX SIR. AND THE CONVERSAATION WENT SOMETHING LIKE THIS. STARTER “WHO WRE YOU? “   TAK,   “ TANAKA SIR.” STARTER, “YOU ARE 15 MINS LATE AND MISSED YOUR TEE TIME. WHY DID YOU NOT COME TO THE TEE? ”TAK,” SIR WE WERE TOLD BY THE PRO SHOP THE TEE TIMES WERE RUNNING LATE AND FOR US TO GO THE PUTTING GREEN AND WAIT FOR YOU TO COME GET US.” STARTER  “YOU SHOULD HAVE COME STRAIGHT TO TEE. I DON'T HAVE TIME TO RUN ALL OVER THIS PLACE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW THEIR TEE TIME OR WHERE THE HELL THEY ARE.” 

TAK,” SIR, I AM SORRY SIR. IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN”.  STARTER. “ WE WILL SEE ABOUT THAT. I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN FIT YOU LOT IN NOW, THE COURSE IS BACKED UP”.  TAK.”NOW JUST YOU WAIT A MINUTE! WE HAVE TRAVELLED A LONG TIME AND PAID GOOD MONEY TO PLAY THIS COURSE. 

IT IS NOT OUR FAULT IF YOU OR YOUR PRO SHOP PEOPLE CANNOT GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER. YOU PEOPLE DO THE GAME OF GOLF A GREAT INJUSTICE WITH YOU STUPID ATTUTIDE. NOW GET US TO THE TEE OR WE WILL GET OURSELVES THERE”.

THE STARTER, STUNNED, LOOKED AT TAK AND HEADED TO THE TEE WITH US IN TOW. TAK WAS RIGHT UP HIS BACK. ONCE WE REACHED THE TEE THE STARTER TURNED AND LEFT. AS WE WERE WAITING TO TEE OFF, TAK TURNED TO ME AND SAID
 
 “ BILLY, YOUR PROBLEM IS YOU LET  PEOPLE  WALK ALL OVER YOU. YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO BE FIRM AND NOT TAKE THEIR CRAP”. I LOOKED AT  TAK, THE MASTER,  AND SAID “HOW RIGHT YOU ARE  SIR, I WILL TRY TO BE MORE FIRM IN FUTURE” TAK TEED UP HIS BALL, KNOCKED IT DOWN THE FAIRWAY GOT INTO THE GOLF CART AND NOTHING MORE WAS SAID. 

BLESSED ARE THE PEACE MAKERS!!


I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THERE ARE ONLY A FEW PEOPLE WHO HAVE WALKED INTO MY LIFE AND GHANGED IT FOR THE GOOD. TAK WAS ONE OF THEM. HE WAS THE FIRST PERSON I CONNECTED WITH AT BRAMPTON GOLF CLUB, A PERSON I ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD TO SPENDING TIME WITH ON OR OFF THE GOLF COURSE.TAK LIVED A PRINCIPLED LIFE WITH GREAT DIGNITY AND FACED ADVERSITY WITH THE COURAGE OF A LION. HE SHOWED ME LIFE IS FLEETING AND THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF LIFE IS THE PEOPLE IN IT. FOR THIS, I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL.
 
FINALLY, TO JEAN, KAREN, SAM AND RAY, AND THE REMAINDER OF THE TANAKA FAMILY,  I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT NOT ONLY WILL MY FAMILY BE THERE FOR YOU IN THIS DIFFICULT TIME  BUT YOUR EXTENDED FAMILY OF FRIENDS AT THE BRAMPTON GOLF CLUB ARE ALSO THERE TO HELP EASE THE SUFFERING.

TAK, I WILL MISS YOU, WE ALL WILL MISS YOU HOWEVER, WITH RAY AND SAM, YOUR FAMILY IS IN GOOD HANDS. YOU HAVE GRACED OUR LIVES IN MORE WAYS THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW. .

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.  Some stay for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts - and we are never the same.  Tak sure left alot of foorprints in alot of peoples hearts.  A pleasure to know him.

Dear Jean and Family:
Tak was a good friend at the Brampton GC; so good that I felt I could ask him if he would employ my son who was about to enter U of T Architecture in the fall of 1994. I suggested an intern position and Tak said, "Of course not, we'll put him on the payroll." Tak was a generous and caring man whose memory our family will always cherish.  Thank you once again Jean from Gary, Greg and Rob McDonald.

Tak Tanaka was a rare combination of gentleman, friend, competitor, politician, golfing aficionado and mentor.  His friendship and guidance were invaluable and will forever be missed by the Johnson family.  We will hold our memories of Tak close to our hearts, and celebrate in knowing that he is in a better place, teeing up with Sudsy on the greatest golf course ever built.

Tak Tanaka was one of the finest "GENTLEMEN" that I have ever met in my life and to ever grace this earth or walk a fairway !!! He was a man's man and a man of honor, respect, humility , honesty, positivity, and you were lucky if he was and called you his friend !!! I will always cherish my fun times/memories with Tak and his unforgettable smile and laugh plus all the wonderful things he stood for and taught me about life, people, compassion and golf... He truly was a GREAT MAN and an "unbelievable" competitor and one of kind, there is no doubt he will be greatly missed by all his friends and family and people who were fortunate enough to have met and got to know him. My deepest condolences to his wife Jean and his children.

Jean and Karen:  It is with great sadness we read about Tak.  We both were members of Brampton for over 30 years, with  many shared stories and memories. I will remember him for the dedication and expertise he put into helping us build the Funeral Centre.  But most of all I remember his humor when he told me, "I can build you a Funeral Home but not a golf game". I was very sorry to hear about Tak - I feel I was so lucky to have met such an important friend of Peter's. My deepest & sincere condolences.
