May 2, 1944 – October 3, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Alfred Alvarez, Jr. on October 3, 2025, at the age of 81. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Alfred will be remembered for his kind spirit, strong values, and the lasting impact he made on everyone who knew him.
Born on May 2, 1944, Alfred lived a life marked by quiet strength, love, and unwavering dedication. A gifted musician from a young age, his passion for music began at Phillip Shore Junior High School and continued into Jefferson High School, where he proudly played saxophone in the marching band. He later performed in local bands including The Mystics and The Loveliters, sharing his talent and joy with the Tampa Bay music scene.
In 1965, at the age of 21, Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve, where he proudly served his country. During his tour of duty, he traveled through South America and Vietnam aboard the destroyer USS Leahy, and later completed his service on the USS James C. Owens.
Alfred met Ginny (Paiz) Alvarez in junior high school, and the two began dating in high school. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned home and married Ginny on August 11, 1968, in Ybor City, Florida. They went on to share 57 beautiful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising two beautiful children, Patti and Mark.
From 1978 to 1988, Alfred was an avid jogger and proudly participated in the Gasparilla Distance Classics, reflecting his passion for staying active and challenging himself. Every day after work, he would run five miles, and on Sundays, he enjoyed running 10 to 12 miles around Horizon Park and various areas throughout Tampa. In 1988, due to the demanding hours of his work as a truck driver for Edwards Sales and Manufacturing, he shifted from jogging to mountain biking, continuing to stay active in his spare time.
Alfred was also a huge sports fan who loved cheering on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Florida Gators. Whether watching a game at home or proudly wearing team colors, he enjoyed celebrating the highs (and enduring the lows) right alongside fellow fans.
He had a personality that drew people to him — always ready with a sharp sense of humor and a perfectly timed one-liner. His wit, warmth, and ability to make others laugh will be remembered by all who knew him.
Alfred is survived by his loving wife, Ginny (Piaz) Alvarez; son, Mark Louis Alvarez; granddaughter, Arielle Renee Alvarez; older sister, Vilma Alvarez; and younger sister, Olga Edwards, along with her sons John David Leto and Cade Edwards. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Patricia (Patti) Alvarez, and his parents, Alfred Alvarez Sr. and Mary Alvarez.
