With heavy hearts and deep gratitude, we celebrate the life of Dannie Lynn Miller. A devoted husband, father, papaw and patriarch whose life was a shining example of love, laughter, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Born in Sidney, Ohio, to Gilbert and Zelma Miller, he was one of 14 children raised in a joyful, love-filled home. From an early age, he learned the values that would shape the man he became: family first, a strong work ethic, and a heart open to all.
He met the love of his life, Janet Spain, in 1958 at church and their first encounter was anything but ordinary. As Janet walked in, he and his brothers Ronnie and Fred were playfully spitting spitballs. What Janet didn’t realize then was that it was Dannie who had been aiming at her and she wouldn’t find out until two years after they were already married! That moment, as unconventional as it was, marked the beginning of something extraordinary. Smitten from the start, he asked her parents for permission to court her. Their first official date took place in Mingo, Ohio, at North Lewisburg Church and so began a love story that would last more than six decades.
On October 1st, 1960, Dannie and Janet were married, starting a 64-year journey of unwavering devotion, faith, and adventure. In those early years, he’d hitchhike just to spend more time with her, a testament to the kind of love and commitment that defined their marriage.
Together, they raised six children, Terry, Teresa, Timmy, Timra, Tina, Tonya and welcomed five in-laws, Lisa, Dave, Michael, Bill and Dayle, whom he affectionately called “his kids.” Their family continued to grow with 20 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandbabies. He loved each of them wholeheartedly, always making you feel like you were his favorite
His generous spirit and sense of humor were as big as his heart. If you ever told him “I love you,” you could expect a cheeky grin and his trademark reply: “I love me too.” It was his playful way of saying he loved you right back and he meant it with his whole soul.
He proudly served in the Army National Guard for three years and later worked as a forklift operator at Del Monte and was a passionate bowler. He was an incredible cook, known for pouring love into every dish he made. Dannie took pride in feeding the people he cared about, and his kitchen was always filled with warmth, laughter, and the delicious smells of comfort food. He had a special fondness for Taco Bell, a good buffet, and, above all, his own home-cooked meals. His legendary pumpkin pie was a family favorite, requested year after year and remembered with every bite.
Faith was the foundation of his life. For over 64 years, he and Janet faithfully attended church camp meetings, most notably Camp Sychar. Their love for camping and fellowship reflected a deep desire to draw closer to God and one another. Since 1979, Dannie had been a faithful member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Seffner, Florida, where he served with humility, devotion, and love.
His life was a masterclass in kindness. He gave freely, forgave easily, and loved without condition. To be around him was to feel safe, seen, and loved. His legacy is one of strength, loyalty, and a faith that never wavered.
He leaves behind his beloved Janet, their ever-growing family, and countless friends who were lucky enough to know him. While our hearts ache in his absence, we take comfort knowing he is now at peace, reunited with loved ones, and resting in the arms of Jesus.
Dannie Lynn Miller was a husband, a father, a brother, a papaw, a veteran, a man of God—and the very best of us. His love and legacy will live on forever.
