
Her parents were Jesse Lee and Cordie Smith Eason. Gene was born in Paris, Tennessee but grew up in Scotts Hill, Tennessee where she, her mother and brother, JL moved following the death of her father. She was only 1 1/2 years old when her father was killed in a railroad accident. The family later moved to Memphis where she graduated from Messick High School and then attended business school. While employed at the 830th AAF Depot, she met and married Hector “Johnny” Hernandez. After traveling several years with the Air Force, they spent their 50+ years of marriage in Tampa, Florida. She and her husband owned and managed a retail business for 37 years. She was a charter member of the North Tampa Business and Professional Women’s Club. Gene belonged to the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and the American Legion Auxiliary. As former Master and First Lady of the Masonic Fellowship Lodge of Tampa, Johnny and Gene frequently traveled to conventions throughout the United States. One of Gene’s proudest accomplishments was volunteering at St. Joseph’s Hospital Tampa for almost 40 years. She was an active member of Wellswood Baptist Church for over 50 years.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Hector (Johnny) Hernandez and her brother, Dr. JL Eason.
Gene and Johnny were the treasured aunt and uncle of their niece and nephews, Jessica Eason Robinson (Jim) and Dr. Dan Eason (Ann), all of Memphis, and Dr. Dave Eason (Pam) of Boydton, VA.
A graveside service for Doris was held Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Hillsboro Memorial Gardens, Brandon, FL
