Hazel M. Davis, known lovingly as “Pinky,” affectionately to many as “Aunty Pinky,” and most cherished by her children as Mom, was a woman of rare fire, sharp intellect, unshakable faith, and a zest for life that lit every room she entered.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on November 19, 1947, to Pearl and Noel Bell, Hazel arrived with a spark that never dimmed. On January 13, 2026, she passed away peacefully at Brandon Hospital in Florida, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant as the life she lived.
Hazel’s life was a testament to quiet courage. Though she lived with sickle cell disease, she never allowed it to define her. Instead, she moved through life with grace, determination, and a steadfast trust in God. Her faith sustained her, her family grounded her, and her compassion for others guided her through every season. As a mother and aunt, she modeled strength, perseverance, and love; lessons her children, grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces will carry with them always.
After attending Tutorial College, Hazel began working at the Jamaica Government Printing Office, where she spent more than twenty years as a professional bookbinder.
Her bold spirit carried her into a new chapter when she migrated to the United States. While many begin to slow down in their 50s, Hazel was only gaining momentum. She continued to nurture her faith as a committed member of Greenwood Baptist Church (GBC). Fueled by her love of learning and her desire to serve others, she enrolled at York College in Queens, New York, where she earned her degree as a Nurse Practitioner in 2002.
In 2004, Hazel began her work at Queens Hospital Health Center, caring for patients with compassion, empathy, and profound respect. Her care extended far beyond medicine; she listened, encouraged, and treated every person with dignity.
Hazel believed deeply in education as a pathway to service. Her personal experience with sickle cell strengthened her empathy and fueled her advocacy. She became a source of knowledge, comfort, and hope for others living with the disease, offering not only her professional expertise but also her understanding heart.
After retiring, Hazel traded the bustle of New York for the sunshine of Brandon, Florida, in 2017. Her faith remained her anchor. As a member of Bell Shoals Church, Hazel lived her faith daily: through conviction, encouragement, kindness, and quiet devotion.
Hazel was a force of nature: smart, spirited, loyal, and unapologetically herself.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Herbert; her brother Ralph; and her sisters Blossom, Evelyn, and Ena. We take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with them now; embraced in love, peace, and rest after a life so faithfully lived.
She leaves to mourn her passing her children: Dwight (Laura), Kyrel (Michelle), and her daughter, Polly (Wayne), as well as her brother, Phillip. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Gabrielle, Donavan, Theophilus, Davis, Bryce, and Kyrel Jr., and her precious great-granddaughter, Nova. A wide circle of in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, each blessed to be part of her world. We will feel her absence deeply.
May Hazel rest in perfect peace, wrapped in the loving arms of her Savior. May the faith that carried her through life now carry her home, and may her love continue to surround all who were blessed to know her. Rest peacefully, Pinky, forever loved and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Hazel’s legacy by contributing to the Ena M. Henry Scholarship Fund at GBC. Donations may be made at gbcbk.link/giving (select Ena M. Henry Scholarship Fund). All contributions are tax-deductible.
