Stephen was born on 9/14/1937 to David and Lois Buchanan in Winchester, MA. After graduating from Watertown High School in 1955 he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland.
Stephen spent his entire career in service to his community and country. He served as a police officer and volunteer fire fighter, he served four years in the US Air Force and had a 30-year career in the federal government working in American Embassies in India, Switzerland, Germany, Egypt, South Africa, Chad and Italy. In 1960 he married Louise Farnham in Boston and went on to have 3 children, Wayne David, Sandra Lynn, and Christopher Douglas.
After retiring from the federal government in 1995 he continued his service with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for an additional 11 years in the 911 call center and the HCSO radio shop.
Stephen spent his spare time involved in the Boy Scouts of America with both his sons. He was also active with Amateur radio starting at age 14 and went on to be a founder and president of the Sheriffs Tactical Amateur Radio Club through the HCSO.
Stephen was predeceased by his mother and Father. He is survived by his sister Merry (Chuck) Robinson and Merry’s children Stevie Miller and Karen Miller Riley of Georgia, his beloved wife Louise, his sons Wayne (Julie) of Spring Hill, FL; Christopher (Cindy) of Brandon, FL and his daughter Sandra of Brandon, FL, as well as five grandchildren Kayla (David) Hand of Spring Hill, FL; Brittany (Austin) Allen of Wesley Chapel, FL; Sonia Buchanan of Spring Hill, FL; Brandon Buchanan of Tampa, FL, and Nathan Buchanan of Brandon, FL and three great-grandchildren Jade, Evelyn and Archer Hand. Also, Louise’s sister Janet (Edgar) Sjolund of Sudbury, MA and their sons Douglas (Deedee and two daughters) of Oceanside, California; Peter of Sudbury, MA and John (Allison) Sjolund of Windham, NH.
