She was born in Windsor, Ontario on the 13th of February 19 hundred and 26, but grew up in Kingston from age 5 until Bill Johnston spotted her and marriage dragged her away in May of ‘46 to Brantford.
Born that close to Valentines, she made sure Dad didn’t get away with a combined Birthday and Valentines gift through their too short marriage, Dad having predeceased her back in January of 1970.
A very loving mother to 6 children and their spouses, great sister to Linda Miller and her husband Gene, and she even found time to keep her Mom Eva and Dad Jim happy with many visits over the years to their home in Kingston.
The flourishing family grew to over 30 more progeny in grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even great-great grandchildren.
Her huge heartbreaks were the early loss of her husband Bill, then a grandchild Danny in crib death, in later life she also lost a son, Rick, and a daughter Lois.
Gerry grew up in the dirty 30’s, came of age through WWII, married a soldier from Brantford, was a torch bearer for working Moms, enjoyed Eastern Star, Curling, Lawn Bowling, any live play she could get tickets to. Raised kids on her own through the 70’s, and basically was a great lady. Throughout all this she usually had at least two books on the go, one light and one of historical non-fiction allowing her to beat anyone at Scrabble, Trivia and clean up watching Jeopardy!
She will be laid to rest at Thorpe’s Funeral Home on Monday the 14th of July. There will be a visitation starting at 11am, followed by a Service at noon. After the service there will be a procession up to Farringdon Cemetery, for those not wanting to attend the grave side service you are welcome to wait in the Thorpe’s Carriage House to mingle. There is a lunch to follow at 2pm in the Thorpe’s Carriage House.
