

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Joan Butcher/Stewart nee O’Connor, on November 8th, 2025 at the age of 92 with family by her side. Joan was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Elizabeth O’Connor. Joan was also the wife of the late Terry Stewart 1959 – 1986 and the late Bill Butcher 1991- 2017. Joan will be deeply missed by her children Heather Gaukel (Larry) and Kyle Stewart (Tracey). Nana to Jess Snobelen (Brad), Shawn Gaukel (Sky). The Butcher Boys - Rick (Barb), Martin (Tanya) and Robin (Kelley). Nana to Steffany Butcher-Melanson (Sean), Katie, Stephen, Emily Smolarz (Brent), Weston & Jordan. Great Nana to Dylan and Blaik Snobelen and Hanna Smolarz. Beloved sister to Maggie and Michele (late Don) and the late Patricia Telfer (Bob) and Mary Balsdon (Dick). As well as all the extended O’Connor clan. Mom was a Registered Nurse. Working in the Coronary Care Unit and the Intensive Care Unit at the Brantford General Hospital for most of her career. She would be approached often while out shopping by people who would thank her for the care she extended to their families. Mom received that same care back in her last months from the staff of Valley View Home in St. Thomas. Joan lived most of her whole life in Brantford. Joan and Terry travelled extensively before his passing and then she travelled in retirement with Bill. She saw a great deal of the world. Joan was an athlete. She played baseball, tennis, curling, bowling, skated and golfed right up until just before her 90th birthday. She loved bridge and was involved in Probus in Brantford for many years. More than anything, Joan loved her family. Nothing was more important than being there Christmas morning, sometimes even before the grandkids were up! Family and Friends will be received at Thorpe Brothers Funeral Home , 96 West St. Brantford, on Sunday November 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Church, 9 Waverly St. Brantford, on Monday November 24th at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Brantford. In lieu of flowers if you wish, a charitable donation to the Stedman Community Hospice or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
