

Allyn.
He was born in Gary, Indiana on October 02, 1923 to Arpad Louis Masley Sr. and Johanna
Masley (Johannides). Soon the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin where his father was a
professor and coach at the University of Wisconsin.
Arp grew up in Madison were he developed a life long love of gardening, fishing, hunting,
birding, nature and the outdoors. He was active in Boy Scouts achieving the rank of Eagle
Scout. It was there that he began his love of sharing his knowledge with others which he
continued throughout his long life. Summers were spent traveling west with the family where he
loved camping, the mountains, wild flowers and wild life.
He received his BA from the University of Wisconsin. He then enrolled in an accelerated
Medical School program through V-12 to prepare doctors that would be needed for the War
effort. World War II ended before he completed school so he was released from his military
obligation.
He continued his medical and surgical training primarily at Virginia Mason in Seattle spending
any free time backpacking and fishing in the Olympic Mountains. Upon learning of a need for
doctors in the Navy and feeling an obligation to pay back his education under V-12, he went on
active duty at Bremerton Naval Hospital. He soon was assigned as medical officer on a troop
transport taking replacement troops to the Korean War. He was harbor surgeon at Incheon and
continued on to Pusan and then the evacuation at Hungnam.
Upon returning to Bremerton, he left active duty (remaining in the reserves) and began his
private surgical practice. He practiced in Bremerton for 34 years retiring in 1987.He volunteered
at the University of Washington Medical School teaching anatomy for 12 years. He continued
his many activities always adding new experiences: making wine, sailing (cruising and racing),
fishing (deep sea and fly fishing including tying his own flies), skiing (charter holder at Crystal
Mountain), tennis (founding member at Bremerton Tennis and Swim Club), mushroom hunting
clam digging (on his own Hood Canal beach and razor clamming at the ocean), crabbing,
collecting oysters, foraging for wild edibles, hunting (big game, birds, wild turkeys), owning and
farming an asparagus farm in Sunnyside, becoming a partner in an Alaska fishing lodge for
yearly fishing trips, hiking, backpacking, climbing mountains, dipping smelt, using his smoker
to smoke salmon smelt and wild turkey, and of course gardening. He became involved in
environmental issues and was named by Governor Dan Evans as the Chairman of the first
State Ecology Commission and kept on by Governor Dixie Lee Ray. He received many awards
for his environmental work with native plants and Hood Canal.
Retirement did not slow him down at all. He became a Master Gardener and designed,
implemented and for years maintained a 5 acre Native Plant Demonstration Garden at Theler
Center in Belfair. He and Peggy (his wife of 46 years) spent winters traveling in their motorhome
visiting friends and family in Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. Later they
spent 4 winters if Florida sailing, birding, kayaking and exploring the southern US. In 2007 they
bought a house in Arizona and spent 10 winters there where he enjoyed growing citrus. They
also enjoyed many foreign trips and cruises especially to Italy, his favorite place.
Through out he loved teaching his children and grandchildren about the things he loved
including smoking salmon, grilling oysters, helping him make his famous strawberry rhubarb
pie.
He is survived by his wife Peggy (LeBeau); son Steven Masley (Nicole) of St Petersburg FL;
daughters Brooke Masley (Bob McWhorter) of Ferndale WA. and Susan Thomas (Joe Ozimek)
of Sande Utah; grandchildren Lucas and Marcos Masley, Colin and Sydney McWhorter, and
Luke and Joey Thomas; great grandson Lorenzo Masley. He is also survived by his sister
Marilyn Rolfs ofWest Bend Wisconsin; brothers-in-law Scott LeBeau (Monica) and Tommy
LeBeau and numerous well loved nieces and nephews. And he is survived by his dear and
precious friend Mendy Harlow (Brandon Palmer) and her daughter Allie.
The family wishes to thank his loving care givers from St Providence Hospice and the Haven in
Allyn for the peace and comfort they gave him.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn funeral home. At his
request there will be no services. A private celebration of life is planned at a later date.
