Frances Moultrie Clement McConnell, a long-time resident of Kitsap County, died April 9, 2019 in Bremerton. Frances was born on August 16, 1926 in Port au Prince, Haiti, to Mortimer Taliaferro Clement and Emma Louise McCown.
She was a student at Winthrop College in North Carolina and then graduated from the University of Washington, class of 1948. During her forty-year career in the Bremerton School District, she touched the lives of thousands through her teaching of English and history. Frances met Walter Leslie McConnell II through a bowling league. They made a strike and set up their own team on July 22, 1955 when they married and started to write “the greatest story.” Frances loved socializing, traveling, playing cards, reading, yelling at the Mariner’s, and being with her family. She and Walt were part of Keyport Bible Church for many years and members of the Gideon’s for forty-four years. She taught Sunday School, they held Bible Studies in their home and she sang solos and was in the choir. Her love for life, quick wit, amazing ability to captivate her audience, and spicy personality will be missed by those who knew her. Due to her abundant energy and special gift of hospitality, her home was always open to local friends and international students, including Simon Shiao who became an unofficial family member.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years; daughter Kathleen (Jeff) Haag of Keyport, son Walter (Claire) McConnell III of Singapore, and daughter Laura (Rolf) Aske of Tacoma; brother-in-Law, Les Roark of Silverdale, and sister-in-law Junko McConnell of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandchildren: Stephanie Aske (Luke) Gendro, Louise McConnell (Martin) Foster, Joshua Walter Aske, Debrorah McConnell, Jenna Aske, Joshua (Isabel) Haag, Jessica Hagg, Julie Haag; Matthew Livingstone, Daniel (Emma) Livingstone, Joe Livingstone; great grandchildren: 7 great grand-children, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. Memorial gifts may be made to the Gideons International, Poulsbo Camp, P.O. Box 909, Poulsbo, WA 98370 or to Keyport Bible Church Mission Fund. An online Memorial can be found at Miller-Woodlawn.
