

Jack was born September 11, 1930 in Gregory, SD to Fay and Amanda (Schultz) Porter. Jack was seventh of eight children. Spent his growing years around Gregory, Herrick, Bonsteel and Winner South Dakota. Jack started working in a plumbing/heating shop in Winner when he was 16 years of age. His job entailed working with plumbing for well, bathroom in homes, sheet metal for heating systems. He later moved to Rapid City working in a plumbing shop that also did heating, he installing plumbing in new homes, repairing plumbing in existing homes, plumbing in business, gas stations, and schools around Rapid City. He helped with the plumbing in Calamity Peaks Lodge in Custer South Dakota and Ft. Randall Dam.
December 27, 1951 to December 7,1955 he was in the Air Force; obtaining a GED while here. After taking training on jet engines and air planes, he felt he had the best job there was he was crew chief on the flight line in Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV, Moody AFB in Valdosta, GA, Amarillo AFB in Amarillo, TX and Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. After service he returned to Rapid City working in a plumbing company.
June 19, 1963, he married Marion Joy Getty better known as Jody, didn’t like the name Joy. Late fall 1966 he and a co-worker from the same plumbing shop took off for Iowa working in a corn processing plant later help with the building of a chemical fertilizer plant. May 1967 he and his family moved to Oregon later Seattle area to work for Boeing. Later that year started working at PSNS as a pipefitter, then Staging then Planning and Estimating retiring from there April 1993.
Jack loved life had a great sense of humor he loved to laugh and was always tell jokes to others. Jack believed when doing something do it right the first time then you don’t have to redo it. He was a good handyman fixing may things tuning up the cars over the years.
He loved to travel, in 1960 he and a friend attended the Indy 500, later in 1962 he and another good friend attended the World’s Fair in Seattle, Mt Rainier and stopping various places to site see really enjoying the country. In 1965 he and Marion/Jody took a trip to the Oregon coast, and Seattle. They loved the area so, thinking someday if we have to move, we’ll come here.
Jack was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Bremerton. Willing to share his faith with others.
Jack is preceded in death by his parent Fay and Amanda Porter, brothers Cecil, Dick, Leroy and Scottie. Sisters Lucille McCrady, Wanda Porter, Evelyne Talcott. His in-laws Bob and Ella Getty. Some nephews and nieces. He is survived by his wife of 62 years 2 sons Jerry (Fay) Porter and Joel Porter (Tina Christy). Several nieces and nephews, and cousins. A memorial will be later this spring.
