Nick was the youngest of four children born to Bertram and Minnie Doney in Saratoga Springs, NY, where he spent his childhood years. His first job was at the Saratoga racetrack. In 1960, the family moved to Phoenix where Nick had many adventures with friends and family. After graduation, Nick joined the US Army 101st Airborne and went to Vietnam in 1968. He served his country for 6 years, surviving both a mortar explosion and malaria. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his wartime achievements. Although those years were difficult, Nick made lifelong friends and connections while serving. He returned home and worked for a time as an auto mechanic before beginning his career in metal studs/drywall, from which he retired in 2016.
In 1979 Nick married Cathy, his true love. They were both project people and built houses together, ran businesses together, enjoyed traveling, and loved each other. Nick helped Cathy raise her kids, Wendy and Kelly, and Nick supported and loved them both throughout his life and was always there for them. Nick loved cats and dogs and always had a beloved pet nearby. He was a photographer and a private pilot. He was an amazing woodworker and built many treasured gifts for loved ones. He was always happy to lend a hand when needed. He enjoyed cooking, and his holiday dinners and summer barbeques are legendary.
Predeceased by his parents, his sister Dee McDermott, and his wife Cathy, Nick is survived by his stepchildren Kelly Thayer (Karelynn) and Wendy, grandchildren Colton, Lindsay and David, sister Geraldine Ungerman Of New York and brother Bert Doney of Texas. Nick was hard working and loving. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
