Donald A. Ferguson "Donnie"

On Monday, October 28, 2019, our hearts were saddened by the home going of our beloved Donald Aaron “Donnie” Ferguson. He was called home after an extensive sickness and rests in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He was the first son born to the late Nathan and Thelma Ferguson, after 4 daughters. He was joyfully welcomed. He attended DC public schools and graduated from Ballou High School in 1971. He had already begun to work for the Safeway stores as a night stocker before graduation and continued at this job, earning a reputation as a steady, dependable employee. He suffered a back injury after several years there, and the resulting surgery forced him to resign on disability.

Donnie was an athletic guy. He enjoyed swimming, basketball and baseball. He learned to swim as a young boy at the neighborhood pool. His favorite stroke was the butterfly! He excelled at this and won many ribbons and trophies, before moving on to basketball and baseball. He played basketball for the Boys’ Club at the #11 Precinct and played first base for the Safeway Store #908. He also learned to enjoy fishing and often accompanied his parents and the next-door neighbor on fishing trips in their later years.

Donald is the father of two devoted daughters, Donella Hickman- Brown (Roland) and Lisa Hickman. They blessed him with four grandchildren – Doneesha, Jestin, Eryn (Tookie) and Anaya.

We were all introduced to the Lord at an early age and attended church as a family. Donald was always spiritual in his relationships with family and friends. He re-confirmed his relationship with the Lord with testimony and prayer.

Donnie leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Donella Hickman-Brown (Roland) and Lisa Hickman, grandchildren, Doneesha and Jestin Hickman and Eryn and Anaya Brown, sisters, Nadine Dempsey (Alfred, deceased), Patricia Durham (Robert, deceased) and brother Gregory (Laura). He was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor and Vivian, and one brother, Gary. He will be missed by many other relatives and friends.
