

Edith Mae (Boyd) Bowie was born on February 2, 1944 in Remlik, Virginia to the late Allen R. Boyd, Sr. and Lucille Burse Boyd. She was called home on September 9, 2022. She was the third of nine children. She was raised in Middlesex County, Virginia where she attended and was baptized at Lebanon Baptist Church. She graduated from St. Clare Walker High School and attended Virginia State University majoring in Accounting.
She moved to Washington, D.C. in 1968 and started working at the United States Post Office at/near Union Station where she met her husband Raymond Bowie. They were married on October 2, 1971. They enjoyed playing tennis, golfing, and attending Redskins games at RFK Stadium. They had two daughters together; Kristie and Ramona Bowie. She also had her own business called the Novelty Shop. Edith began delivering newspapers for the Potomac News around 1974-1975 and became a District Manager around 1988. She retired in 2006 to begin her new career of caring for her grandchildren. She also delivered routes for the Washington Post for many years.
Edith was an avid reader growing up and also was a talented artist. She created some sculptures but her favorite creations were her paintings. Edith was a huge sports fan and supported her local D.C. teams. Anyone that knew her knew that she was a Redskins fan through and through. She also enjoyed watching baseball, basketball, and tennis.One of her final sports joys was watching Serena Williams’ final matches. She was her biggest fan.
Edith was a soldier for the Lord every single day and trusted in all things as his plan throughout her life. She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist church for decades under the leadership of Rev. Frederick L. Ray and Rev. Clyde W. Ellis, Jr. and attended almost every Sunday until her health declined. She was on the Usher board and participated in Vacation Bible School during the summer. She was thankful when Mt. Olive began streaming their services so that she can continue to be there every Sunday.
Edith is survived by her three children: Kristie Bowie-Young, Ramona Bowie, and Eric Cannon, her son-in-law Dave Young, daughter-in-law Stephanie Cannon, six grandchildren, Kenton Young, Kennard Young, Kendrick Young, Devaughn Miller, Eric Cannon, Jr. and Alexandra Cannon whom she loved with all of her being. She is also survived by her sisters: Gladis McKoy, Janice Boyd, Harriet Boyd, Gloria Yarbrough, Joyce Ann Woodard and her brothers Allen Boyd, Jr., John Boyd along with a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, brother and sister-in-laws. She never referred to them as in-laws but as brothers and sisters as well. She is proceeded in death by her brother James Boyd, husband Raymond Bowie, mother Lucille Burse Boyd, father Allen Boyd Sr, and mother-in-law Pauline Bowie.
A visitation for Edith will be held Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Mount Olive Baptist Church - Woodbridge, 13111 Minnieville Road, Woodbridge, VA 22192. A celebration of life will occur Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM, 13111 Minnieville Road, Woodbridge, VA 22192. An interment will occur Friday, September 23, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, MD 20722.
