

Helen Elizabeth (nee Hargrove) Cooper was born to the late Isham and Fannie Robinson Hargrove on February 17, 1926 in Sampson County, North Carolina. She was educated in public schools in Roseboro, N.C. She moved to Washington, D.C. in the 1950s where she had several jobs before beginning work in the Federal Government at the Department of Transportation for many years before retiring in 1993.
Helen was married to the late James (Jimmy) Cooper until his death in 2012.
She loved her family and friends. She enjoyed being with her family. If there was any type of family get-together we knew she would be there. She was an unselfish woman who helped others. Helen loved music especially gospel. She was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
Helen gave her life to Christ at an early age and was a dedicated Christian and became a member of Second New Saint Paul Baptist Church, along with her husband, in Wash., DC which she attended until she was no longer able to attend in person, then started watching online services. God saw fit to grant her a very long life.
She is survived by her two daughters: Emma Bumbry and Marie Lewis; one stepdaughter: Judy Cooper. One sister-in-law: Jean Caesar, and one surviving sibling: Alice Gray. Her son Jesse Woodrow preceded her in death. She also leaves to mourn her six grandchildren: Danita Roy, Camille Parks, Ben Dawson, Maurice Hargrove, Derrick Hargrove and Zenobia Hargrove; one grandson Mark Bumbry preceded her in death. She also leaves many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.
