Born in Washington, DC to Leroy Jr and Bettye Hill, our brother was always the calm, rational sibling. Quiet, but not shy, always with good advice and a ready smile. He was loyal to his family, devoted to his mother and protective of those he loved. You could count on a dose of truth as he saw it- whether you agreed with the message or not. He believed in being honest and he lived his life with dignity, integrity and fairness.
Our brother was a true Washingtonian. After graduating from McKinley Tech in 1973 and obtaining his college degree from Metro State College in Denver, CO, (1977), he returned to DC and really never wanted to live anywhere else. He loved sports and politics and was against any government policy that hurt others – he simply couldn’t understand why, if you could help people you wouldn’t. He also believed MSNBC and CNN were the only truthful news channels worth watching. And he read the delivered home edition of the Washington Post every single day of his adult life.
He was a wonderful neighbor and friend to Newton Street and the Woodridge community. We’ve heard countless stories of how he helped those in need of a “hand up”. He mentored and assisted co-workers and took pride in his career in IT. He had a strong work ethic and could be depended on to arrive at his job (Beltsville, Md) promptly, before 4am, without fail.
Leroy had a special sense of humor. Like many of us, he was a die hard Redskins fan. But he’d only watch the game alone as he convinced himself years ago that a crowded room guaranteed defeat!
We will remember the little things too! How delicious his favorite thing to cook was - spaghetti and meat sauce. His favorite neighborhood carry out- Wah Mees for Chinese, and his inability to understand how anyone could ride by a Popeyes once they caught a whiff of the aroma. Last of all, anyone who knew him knew he loved chocolate cake. Monica made sure to bake him one for every special occasion.
Most of all, he will be missed by friends, neighbors and family. But never ever forgotten.
With Love,
Your Sisters Monica (Claude Briggs) and Tina (Jerone Hodges)
