In Loving Memory of Marie Antoinette Lacey
Marie Lacey was an incredible woman whose life was a testament to devotion, selflessness,
commitment, and sacrifice, she passed away on August 16, 2023, at the age of 88. She leaves a
legacy of resilience, compassion, and empathy that will inspire those who were fortunate enough
to know her.
Born August 9, 1935, to the late Ernest Tompkins and Laura T. Tompkins in Washington, D.C.
Marie displayed an early passion for ballet, twirling and leaping through her childhood with enthusiasm. Though her dreams of becoming a ballerina were never fulfilled, the discipline and elegance she acquired in those early years would shape her character throughout her life.
Marie met Elmer N. Lacey and entered into holy matrimony in July 1954. Together they nurtured and loved their four children Nathaniel, Dwight, Antonio, and Nichelle.
In the face of life's challenges, Marie displayed remarkable resilience and an unbreakable spirit.
Marie dedicated her life to caring for her family, assuming the role of nurse and caregiver. She
devoted her life to caring for her beloved husband, Elmer Lacey, who faced several disabilities
that required her constant care and attention. Her unyielding support and the tenderness with
which she attended to his needs were extraordinary.
In addition to her role as a loving and supporting wife, Marie was a dedicated mother to her
children. Her nurturing spirit and sacrifice were a beacon of strength for her children, whom she
raised with love and sacrifice. She instilled in them the values of kindness, resilience, and the
importance of education.
Marie was a crossword puzzle enthusiast, enjoyed watching the “Blackish” television show, and
was a fan of action movies. She found great joy in the daily challenge of crossword puzzles,
tackling each one with a sharp mind and a determination to conquer even the most challenging
puzzles. Her passion for puzzles served as a testament to her love for language and intellectual
engagement.
Marie's passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but her memory will live on in the
hearts of her family and all who were graced by her kindness. She taught us the beauty of
selflessness, empathy, and thoughtfulness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Lacey.
She leaves to cherish her faithful and beloved sister, Jewel Hernandez, her children, Nathaniel,
Dwight, Antonio, and Nichelle; grandchildren, Serina, Sean, Cody, and Mara; great-
grandchildren Brianna, Max, and Sean Jr.; daughters-in-law Cynthia and Romy, nephew and nieces, Michael, Risa, and Colline and a host of relatives, in-laws, and friends.
In our hearts, she will forever dance with the grace and poise of the ballerina she once aspired to
be. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and gratitude of those she leaves behind.
