Ralph Robert Stepney

On June 19, 2021, Ralph Robert Stepney (aka Sherrie), of Washington DC, departed this life. Born August 15, 1937 in Washington DC to the late Raymond Robert Stepney and Thelma Elizabeth Robinson, Ralph was the loving brother of Sylvianne F. Jackson (deceased), Forrest Cherry (deceased), and his one remaining sibling, James Cherry, Jr.

A lifetime resident of the District of Columbia, Ralph attended DC public schools, worked as a caregiver and companion to multiple persons in the Georgetown area, and performed in several venues as an exotic dancer and fashion model using the stage name “Sherrie”, a name that remained with him throughout his lifetime. Ralph was very personable; he loved meeting and talking to people. Ralph who’s favorite color was red and enjoyed mystery train rides, attending plays at the Kennedy Center, dancing, shopping, flea markets, watching award shows, and going to the casino. Ralph’s favorite artist were Aretha Franklin especially her recording of “AINT NO WAY” and adored Ertha Kit’s “SANTA BABY” which he would often entertain everyone with his impersonation of her at Christmas and other occasions.

Ralph was a spiritual person who prayed daily for himself as well as his family and friends. He would often say it would take him 2-3 hours to say his daily prayers and if he was interrupted, he would stop and pick back up where he left off making sure none were left unsaid.

Ralph was a long time residence of the Kenmore Apartments, a place he was very proud to call home. Due to his failing health he had to be moved to Stoddard Baptist Rehabilitation Center, where he said his final good-bye.

Ralph is survived by one brother, James Cherry, Jr. of Atlanta, GA; one sister-in-law Joanne Cherry (Forrest) of Atlanta, GA; 7 nieces and nephews, Frederick Jackson (Patricia-White Jackson), Shearon Jackson, Raynell Jackson, Karren Jackson, Denease Jackson, Forrest Leo Cherry, Jr. (Chanie), Noel Bridges (Jermiah); cousins, Sylvia Anderson and Evelyn Gould; a great friend, Leroy Anderson, and a host of great nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
