DeVonte’ was born on February 28, 1992, in Milwaukee, WI, to the union of Timothy Wilson Yates and Veronica Lynette Robinson. He received his early education at St. Leo’s Elementary School and graduated from Messmer High School in the Class of 2010. He continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, earning an associate degree in social work. He furthered his education at Concordia University, where he was placed on the Dean’s List in February 2025 and recognized for his outstanding academic achievements.
From an early age, DeVonte’ accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was baptized as an infant at St. Gabriel Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder G.L. Shaw. After Elder Shaw’s passing, he became a devoted member of Jabez C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Pastor Christopher L. Tolbert, where his membership remained.
As a teenager, DeVonte’ held various jobs, but a defining moment in his life came when he walked away from employment to become an activist for the “Fight for $15” movement advocating for a higher minimum wage. He was deeply inspired by the values instilled in him by his parents and grandparents—always standing up for himself and fighting for what he believed in.
Throughout his life, he worked for the Milwaukee courthouse, the DMV, and several other state and county agencies. His passion for social justice extended to volunteering with local shelters, domestic violence programs, the Criminal Justice Relief Board, and many other organizations. His most recent role was with Vote Riders, where he worked on reintegration and rehabilitation programs for formerly incarcerated individuals. He taught financial literacy and job readiness courses, helping others transition successfully into society.
In his spare time, DeVonte’ exhibited his love for the arts. He was an avid actor and singer, participating in numerous stage productions. One of his most notable performances was starring as the Lion in The Wiz at Shorewood High School. He showcased his vocal talents in various talent shows and even auditioned for The Voice, American Idol, and Sunday Best, advancing to the final rounds in each competition. His extraordinary acting and vocal abilities were a true gift from God, and he performed with grace and passion.
Beyond the stage, DeVonte’ enjoyed reading, playing board games like chess and checkers, and working with electronics (he was a computer wiz). He cherished time with his family and friends. He often visited his grandparents in Warsaw, VA, where he once lived and developed a love for country life—riding gators, gardening, camping, and swimming.
DeVonte’ leaves behind cherished memories with his father, Timothy (Hope) Yates; his mother, Veronica Williams; his sister, Ashante Yates; his grandmother, Linda Chambers; his uncle Rodney (Rochelle) Robinson; his aunt Marcella (Robert) Wilson; his aunt Lisa Robinson; his uncle Frazier (Lisa) Robinson; and a host of loving cousins, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frazier and Lula Robinson and Michael Chambers, as well as his aunt, Margaret Chambers-Horne.
A visitation will be held Saturday, March 15, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Chapel of the Chimes, 13235 W Capitol Dr, Brookfield, Wisconsin 53005, followed by a Celebration of Life beginning at 2:00 PM.
