With heavy hearts and profound love, we announce the passing of Dr. Alan Greene, at his home in Jamaica Plain. He was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and cherished friend, who left us on February 28, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born in the Bronx, New York, on May 11, 1934, Alan grew up surrounded by the love of his parents, Herman and Edna, and his brother, Fred. From a young age, Alan exhibited a zest for life, a curiosity about the world, and an unrelenting drive to make a difference. He would go on to spend his life serving others — whether as a trusted radiologist, a caring mentor to interns, or as a kind-hearted volunteer in the community.
Alan graduated from Union College in 1956 before pursuing his medical degree at SUNY College of Medicine, where he graduated in 1960. He then completed his residency at the prestigious Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1961-1966. His service to his country included a stint as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base from 1965-1966. After his military service, Alan dedicated his professional life to the field of radiology, first as a staff radiologist at Faulkner Hospital from 1967-1975, and then as the Associate Chief of Radiology from 1975-1988.
Beyond his medical career, Alan’s legacy is marked by his infectious sense of humor, his ability to make others smile, and his passion for creativity. He authored two books: Through the Years: A Collection of Email Jokes, Random Thoughts, and Other Funny Stuff and Ethnic Emails – The Jewish Collection. He even tried his hand at stand-up comedy (https://www.youtube.com/watch…) Always eager to bring laughter into any room, he brought joy to all who knew him, often through stories, jokes, and his endless supply of funny emails.
Alan’s beloved wife, Susan Greene, was his steadfast partner in life, and together they created a home filled with love, laughter, and care. For many years, Susan lovingly dedicated herself to supporting Alan through his battle with Parkinson's disease. Her devotion, compassion, and strength during this time were nothing short of remarkable, and she was Alan’s rock, always by his side through every challenge. Their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love and commitment.
Alan was a loving and dedicated father to Judybeth, David, and Deborah, who were born during his previous marriage to Dr. Roberta Sacks. Each of his children carries forward his legacy of warmth, wisdom, and compassion. He was a proud grandfather to Emma, Lucas, and Zoe, all of whom were the bright lights of his life, filling his heart with joy in every moment they shared together.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Alan was passionate about giving back. He volunteered with organizations like Executive Service Corps, Boston by Foot, and The Ship Hope, and he made time to teach interns how to read x-rays, passing on his knowledge to the next generation of medical professionals. He was always eager to travel, learn about history, and immerse himself in the world around him.
Alan’s zest for life extended beyond his work and volunteerism. He was an avid sports fan who loved following his Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics, and he was known for his spirited discussions about the games. His infectious enthusiasm for the world around him was matched only by his love of family, travel, and the simple joys in life.
Alan’s family and friends will forever remember him for his unwavering kindness, his ability to make anyone feel special, and his unbridled love for life. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and service to others. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 3 at 11 AM at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel (1668 Beacon St, Brookline, Ma). Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Rest in peace, Alan. You made the world a better, brighter place, and we will carry your memory with us forever.
