It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Deena (Dianne) Blau, beloved wife of Dr. Michael Blau for 56 years, and devoted mother to Jonathan Blau and his wife Heidi, and Mireille Blau and her longtime partner Matt Dornfeld. Deena was predeceased by her mother Evelyn (Bercowitz) Opat and her fathers, Sidney Alper and Joseph Opat.
Deena was a loving grandmother to Piper, Luke, Caleb, Chandler, and Spencer. She was also a cherished sister to Lorraine Alper Kramer and husband Bruce, and Gail King and husband Jim, and was predeceased by her sister June Alper Zeiner and brother-in-law Jimmy. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Born in New York City, Deena lived most of her life in Brookline, MA. She graduated from Hofstra University in 1967 and received certifications and degrees to educate and support the well-being of children, touching many lives with her compassion and dedication.
Of Deena’s many legacies, her greatest was her unwavering commitment to her community. After surviving breast cancer, she founded Temple Sinai’s Caring Committee, which she chaired for many years, providing support to those in need through visits, meals, and friendship. In recognition of her leadership and vision, the Caring Network was recently renamed the Deena Blau Caring Network. Deena also founded a healing service at Temple Sinai that she helped lead for 18 years, and played an integral role in the Soviet Jewry Committee, assisting families as they settled in America. In 2002, Deena received the Harry Wheeler Distinguished Service Award for her selfless contributions to both Temple Sinai and the wider community.
Deena’s passion for life and people extended beyond her work. She was a world traveler who embraced many cultures which influenced her vibrant and eclectic style.
Deena’s heart and generosity knew no bounds. She was known for her warm and welcoming spirit, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a meal. With respect and a moral compass she made everyone feel special, and her legacy of love, kindness, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Deena’s life was built on a foundation of love for family. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
