

Dr. Edward Blacker Ph.D. age 85, passed away in northern VA on March 27, 2016. A 50 year resident of Belmont, MA. Beloved husband of the late Lillian F. Blacker. Survived and much loved by those he constantly sought to help and educate. Son Joshua Blacker and his wife Sheila Murphy, daughter Elissa Levine and her husband Martin, and son Daniel Blacker and his wife Stefanie Schwartz. Grandchildren Louis, Lily, Rachel, Sarah and Ethan. Brother of Selma Brody.
Edward Blacker was born in Brooklyn NY. Graduated from City College of NY, BSS in Psychology, 1951. Harvard University, Department of Social Relations, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology 1958. Director of the Division of Alcoholism, Massachusetts Department of Public Health 1963-1986. Visiting Lecturer, Harvard Medical School. Associate Faculty, Clinical Professor, Boston University. He had numerous Academic Publications and was the recipient of many prestigious Awards.
Edward Blacker held a strong belief in the ability of an individual to effect public change. He applied that belief personally to the repeal of the “Blue Laws” in Massachusetts in the early 1960’s and professionally with the decriminalization of public drunkenness and the establishment of a system of half way houses throughout the State. He was an avid traveler, exploring 6 continents, and had a keen interest in music, art, history and politics.
He helped found the “Belmont Civic Association” which actively participated in political activities in Belmont. He served on the “Building Committee” for “Belmont High School” and promoted a vision for the facility that has helped educate generations of students. In memory of his wife, he created the “Lillian F. Blacker Prize for Excellence in Writing” which is awarded annually in a ceremony at Belmont High School.
Edward Blacker, the son of immigrants, was a scholar, a creator, a valued and trusted advisor, an exemplary community member and an achiever whose life personified “The American Dream.” He was a much loved Father and family leader. He will truly be missed.
Services at Levine Chapel, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline MA on Wednesday, March 30 at 1:30 PM. Burial at Tifereth Israel Cemetery, 350 Grove Street, West Roxbury. Following burial, memorial observance will be at Embassy Suites, 550 Winter Street, Waltham, MA from 5:00 to 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
