Ellyn Andrea Schweig, 68, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, October 16, at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Ellyn was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts to the late Paul Handorff and Anna (Spind) Handorff.
A devoted wife, mother, and lover of all creatures great and small, Ellyn was a woman of many gifts and talents. She was an elementary school teacher, a bowler, an amateur ceramicist, a majorette, and the first woman to play trombone in her high school marching band. For nearly 50 years, Ellyn traveled the globe with her family on countless adventures through Europe and Asia, cooking in Tuscany, riding camels in the Canary Islands, and watching a Danish-language production of "Hair."
Ellyn enjoyed Scandinavian design, suspenseful movies, songs from the first British Invasion, and celebrating the triumphs of Boston-area sports teams. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, whom she loved tirelessly, unconditionally, and entirely selflessly.
Ellyn leaves behind three treasured children and their partners, Jonathan Schweig and Jennifer Cowan, Allyson (Schweig) Noel and Brian Noel, and Meredith Schweig and Andres Su; and three adoring grandchildren, Fiona Schweig, Charlotte Noel, and June Schweig-Su. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Marc.
Funeral services will be held at Levine Chapels in Brookline, Massachusetts, at one p.m. on Thursday, October 19, with a burial to follow at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. Those who knew and loved Ellyn are warmly welcomed to attend. If you would like to honor Ellyn, we suggest in lieu of flowers a donation to the Cancer Research Institute (http://cancerresearch.org) or to Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary (http://ofsds.org/index.html).
