OBITUARY

Gabor J. Kalman

IN THE CARE OF

Levine Chapels

Gabor J. Kalman, age 92, passed away after an illness on December 10, 2022 in Budapest where he’s lived for the past three years. He was originally from Budapest but left Hungary during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising and, with his wife and daughter, moved to Israel where he taught at Technion-Israel and became Full Professor of Physics. After the birth of his son, he moved first to Orsay, France and taught at Université de Paris, and subsequently to the Boston area where he was on the faculty at Brandeis University in Waltham and, for the last 48 years of his career, at Boston College in Newton. During his career he published 270 papers, received fellowships in the American Physical Society and the New York Academy of Sciences and was elected to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

He had an inquisitive mind and an unbounded curiosity about the world around him, and he would gladly engage just about anyone in hours long discussions on almost any topic. He was an avid traveler with a particular interest in visiting cathedrals, an enthusiast of exhibitions (he liked modern art best) and an aficionado of opera. He was predeceased by his wife, Suzana, and is survived by his daughter, Katalin, and his son, Ron.

Services at the Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard St., Brookline, MA on Thursday, February 16 at 11:00am, burial will follow in the Walnut Hills Cemetery in Brookline.
