Gerald Irwin Elovitz (aka Jerry Ellis) co-founder of the legendary New England-based bargain emporia BUILDING #19. With great sadness the family announces the passing of Gerald Elovitz (“Jerry Ellis”) at the age of 90 on Saturday, November 11, 2017. Born in Providence, RI and raised in Hartford, CT, Gerry served in the U.S. Army (stationed in Italy, near Trieste), graduated Trinity College in Hartford and married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Glaubinger. Loved and adored by his family, Gerry’s greatest joy was his large (and growing) family. Always an optimist, Gerry also enjoyed golf, tennis and ice cream (his favorite flavor was chocolate “because it didn’t show the dirt.”) A past president of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, Gerry and Elaine supported and funded many causes including JNF, CJP, JF&CS, Israel Bonds, Hebrew Rehab, and the Building #19 Foundation. In addition to his beloved wife of 69 years, Gerry leaves behind his children: Linda Elovitz Marshall (Dr. Robert Marshall), Bill Elovitz (Debra Calvi Elovitz), and Judi Elovitz (Norman Greenberg); grandchildren: Dena Marshall (Judah Markel), Dr. Jonah Marshall (Erin), Benjamin Marshall (Lisa), Rebecca Haroush (Yossi Haroush), Eric Dyer (Dr. Stacey Burns), Adam Dyer, Sammy Dyer, Stephanie Africk (Mike), David (Lori) Greenberg, Leah Dyer, Elana Dyer (Lauren Coppolla) and great-grandchildren: Niomi, Leah, Lyra, Talia, Ezra, Gabriel, Julia Rose, Avigail, Noa, Baruch, Orly, Aviya, Ellie, Jake, Janie, Jessie, Addison, Matthew, Harper and Olivia. Gerry was the loving brother of the late David Elovitz and his surviving wife Fran and Pauline “Poppy” Richman and her late husband Milton. Services are private for family members on Monday, November 13. Following the service, the family will be observing Shiva today, Monday at NewBridge on the Charles from 4:00-7:00pm and continuing at Judi and Norman’s home Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 1:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm, Friday l:00-3:30pm and Saturday 6:00-8:00pm. For those who wish, the family requests that charitable donations be made in Gerry’s memory to Hebrew College http://www.hebrewcollege.edu/giving-options or Hebrew Senior Life Hospice http://www.hebrewseniorlife.org/gifts-in-honor-or-memory)
