Honey “Hanna” (Bloom) Zeiger, 86, of Dedham, formerly of Newton on Sunday, September 30, 2018. Born in Boston, Honey attended Boston Public Schools, Simmons College, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Boston University School of Education (Library Science). Honey was a woman of exceptional charm, intelligence, humor and originality. She loved children’s books and devoted her professional energies to children’s literature. For more than twenty years, she served as librarian at the Pierce School, Brookline; and later as a reviewer for the Horn Book Magazine, and as Editor of the Horn Book Guide from 1992-98. A lifelong lover of words, she excelled at crossword puzzles and scrabble. Although Yiddish was her first language, she was a champion of the city-wide Boston Schools spelling bee as a teenager.
Her devoted husband, partner and cherished friend of 56 years Herbert Zeiger, died in 2011. Together, they savored art and music, Japanese samurai films, breakfast in bed, spending time with grandchildren, and visits to Cape Cod, the site of their honeymoon. Honey is survived by her three children, Joel & Sara deBeer Zeiger, Susan Zeiger & Jeffrey Katz and Judith Zeiger & Michael McNulty along with six grandchildren, Bernard and Rebecca deBeer Zeiger, Daniel and Micah Katz-Zeiger, and Aminah and Saffiya McNulty. Honey was the dear sister of the late Paul Bloom.
She had Alzheimer’s disease for a number of years but always radiated warmth and graciousness. She had an amazing “delighted to see you” smile. We will miss having her glowing presence in our lives.
All are welcome to attend funeral services at Temple Ohabei Shalom, 1187 Beacon St. Brookline, on Friday, October 5 at 10:30am. A private burial will follow.
